Zulu Spear is a pioneer and leader in the Bay Area World Beat music scene. This movement quickly spread like wildfire across the country. Zulu Spear received the 1987 Bay Area Music Award for Best Blues /Ethnic Act .They performed at Oakland Stadium for the June 1990 Nelson Mandela Celebration commemorating Mandela's prison release. The event was attended by Mandela,and Zulu Spear perfomed the concert along with The Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Rait, Sweet Honey In the Rock, Joan Baez, Sarafina,and others. Zulu Spear has recorded an LP on Capitol Records. The band of African and American musicians combines South African rhythms and songs with American rock and blues, using electric guitars and drums, resulting in South African pop music before Paul Simon’s 1986 “Graceland” album popularized the style. Additionally, members present traditional South African dancing along with the music. The group was founded by the late South African expatriate singer-composer-dancer Sechaba Mokeoena. .. The band reunited when singer Gideon Bendile issued a new CD, “Come Over to Our House,” that includes tracks from the original band’s unreleased Capitol sessions as well as new music. Zulu Spear features eight members of the band – singer-dancer sGideon Bendile and Morgan Nhlapo, guitarists Matthew Lacques and Ron Van Leeuwaarde, drummer Jerome Leonard, bassist Pajoe Amissah, saxophonist and flutist Adam Beach and singer and percussionist Moeketsi Gibe.
