Jabo better known as the “Texas Prince of Zydeco” was born on October 1, 1954 in Humble, Texas. He started singing and playing drums at the age of 8 and like most artists was deeply rooted in the church. As a young man he was exposed to different types and genres of music, by his early teens he was performing the Blues and later started playing Zydeco in his early thirties. He was inspired and influenced by such greats as Joe Simon, Boo Zoo Chavis; Rockin’ Sidney; Clifton Chenier; Bobby Blue Bland; B.B. King and a host of others.
Jabo has endured many ups and downs in his musical career, but he has never given up on his dream of being a success. Undeniably, his unique style of Blues and Zydeco has made him one of the most sought after performers of today. The self proclaimed “Texas Prince of Zydeco” is among the Houston area’s most prominent and contemporary performers. A bluesman whose affection for Zydeco inspired him to fuse the two along with his own accordion sounds bluesy resulting in such an intriguing sound. In 1988 he released his first single on Maison De Soul record label and in 1990 released his first album titled “Texas Prince of Zydeco” which can still be purchased today on Amazon.com.
Jabo has created quite a name for himself in the music industry; he has been featured on the cover of the Texas Monthly along with having articles written on him by the Houston Chronicle and other Zydeco and Blues magazines. In 1988, while working on a project he met and later teamed up musical great Calvin Owens and has been featured on several of his albums. He has also performed and has been an opening act for such legendary artists as Rue Davis; Bobby Blue Bland; Rockin Sidney; Johnnie Taylor; Tyrone Davis and many othes.
He took an 8 year hiatus from 1996 to 2004 but in 2005 he came back stronger than ever released a new album titled “Zydeco Around the Town” which was greatly received by his long awaiting fans. In October and November 2007 the single titled “You Didn’t Hurt Me” written by Rue Davis and performed with the Calvin Owen Orchestra Band hit 4 on the music charts.
Today Jabo continues to overwhelm audiences, the size of the crowd doesn’t matter, whether it is in a club atmosphere or large auditorium audiences are captivated by his high energy and dynamic stage presence along with his powerful mixture of Blues and Zydeco. When asked how he would like to be remember? His answer was first as a man of God who is humble, has a spiritual nature and one who truly appreciates and loves his fans.
