One of the hottest bands to surface from the arid land of Alice Springs, are three-piece acoustic hard rock band, Zenith ASP. Telling the tales of growing up in remote Central Australia, in a small town at the forefront of so many political, social and environmental controversies. Front man and lead guitarist Jayden McGrath delivers with a ripe sound, intricate heavy licks and a captivating presence. On bass, Evan Berard turns it up with his ability to entertain not only with his fat chunky bass lines but his love of swinging, flipping and absolutely shredding his bass, leaving you no choice but to get your rock fingers out and scream till your lungs give out. Joey Klarenbeek throws down on the drums with impeccable timing and abstruse fills, clutching any audience with the hands of the boogie beast.
With influences spawning from acts such as Opeth, Birds of Tokyo, Karnivool, The Butterfly Effect and Tool, Zeniths metal infused hard rock is practically impossible not to move too. Zenith have been playing together live for the past 6 years have shared the stage with the likes of Mammal, Hill Top Hoods, British India, Living End, Jet, Missy Higgins, Something For Kate and Pete Murray to name a few.
At only 19, these young men have already achieved things in their budding music career that many musicians work a lifetime to accomplish and never experience. Like winning the Triple J Unearthed AWOL competition in 2007, playing the annual Alice festival ‘Bass In The Dust’ twice and Darwin’s ‘Bass in the Grass’ at the age of 15 to a festival that saw 10,000 people come through the gates. 2008 also saw Zenith hit the road with their self-titled debut LP recorded at Sydney’s Damien Gerard Studio produced by Marshall Cullen. Locking in dates in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Darwin, playing 10 shows in 12 days recruiting raging fans across the country. The album launch in Alice sold out to over 300 people and the tour was such a success that promoters immediately booked the boys for a second show in the upcoming months. The boys also secured a position on the FUSE festival Ignition showcase in ’08 at the Governor Hindmarsh.
Zeniths recent relocation to Melbourne at the beginning of 2009 has seen the boys get straight to work in the studio to develop their progressive new sound. They’ve been playing flat out around town including the Mooney Ponds & Mooney Valley festivals, which saw around 70,000 people walk the grounds. All in all the boys have been welcomed to the Melbourne live music scene with open arms and to are set to do huge things this year, so if you see them on a bill, buy a ticket, it’ll be money well spent.
