b. Hassen Gouaned, France.
In his teens Master-H would apparently hide under mixing desks in Parisian clubs observing DJ skills while avoiding the club owners who would throw him out for being under-age. Before too long, however, H was playing out soul, funk, hip-hop and house in the more fashionable clubs of Paris, New York and Glasgow, Scotland, DJing at soirees for Paul Smith and Versace and enjoying a residency at Laurent Garnier’s club night in Corsica. Echoing the link between Paris and Glasgow that had been forged via Daft Punk’s early association with Soma Records, Master-H signed to the same Scottish label while Glasgow’s Soma Records club were so enamoured with Master-H that he was booked to play the promoter’s own wedding. For his fresh ‘n’ funky house music-making Master-H works with producer/musician/songwriter Andy Gillespie, a sometime collaborator with artists as disparate as Slam and Simple Minds. The collaboration initially produced the Carl Cox and Lottie -fêted Mayflower EP in 2000. As well as drawing on samples from classic French film La Femme Du Boulanger (The Butcher’s Wife), Master-H’s Thirteen also matched him with ‘sonic voodoo house bandits’ Silicone Soul and ‘Glasgow house-master’ DJQ. Master-H’s stated intent for the release was straight-forward: ‘It’s intended to make people happy’, declared Gouaned upon its release.
