b. 23 July 1949, New York City, New York, USA.
Percussionist and drummer Edwards received formal drum tuition from established players including Ted Reed and Alan Dawson. He played with various ensembles during his teenage years, including his local All City High School Band and the American Symphony Orchestra. He first came to notice with his notable contribution to Cecil Taylor’s powerful Dark Unto Themselves in 1976. Edwards has recorded some of his most challenging work with David S. Ware (Passage To Music, Great Bliss, Flight Of i) and Charles Gayle (More Live At KF).

Edwards debuted with his own band in 1990 and has performed at numerous festivals. He is a drummer who creates space where necessary and demonstrates his considerable percussive skills where demanded (such as on ‘Bumblebees And Marigold Flowers’ from Black Queen). His own recordings as leader have featured notable work by alto saxophonist Rob Brown and tenor player Sabir Mateen.
