About me:

The Crew: 4Traits are Assembly Line Portraits created by a group of four emerging artists from Washington, DC: Brandon Bloch, Alex Slater, Rob Stelboum, and Ming Yi Sung Zaleski. These four artists come from diverse backgrounds, with artistic talent in different media (graphic, video, textile, illustration)… but they all bring their strengths together to create tag-team portraits as a collective group.
The Process: Traditionally, portrait art has been an intimate process – a work of art created by one artist working with an individual model. However, 4Traits are created in a whole new style. A team of artists working together on a group of portraits… publicly, simultaneously… improvising like a jazz quartet.
It goes like this: Four volunteers sit across a table from the four artists. The artists work on the portrait of the person seated across from them for 5 minutes. When the 5 minutes are up, the person and their portrait move on to the next artist in line, musical chairs style. At each position, the next artist continues to build on the previous artist’s work… adding lines, shapes, shadows, texture, color… until all four artists have worked on each portrait. After 20 minutes, the final work of art is complete.
Not only is it fun to get a 4trait drawn, it's also fun to watch. Passersby are encouraged to observe... and there is often a good sized audience looking over the artists' shoulders.
History: In the winter of 2003, a group of artists met through Craigslist looking to create and stage an independent art show without the help of established art galleries. The group dreamt and debated for months… and at one meeting a unique idea was born, almost accidentally. Meeting at a café one night, Ming took out her sketchbook and began drawing an old man seated nearby, Rob took the sketchbook next and began drawing the same old man on top of Ming’s drawing, then Brandon grabbed the book and added to the portrait further. The group decided to forget the art show idea and start something fresh!
Since then, the group has been experimenting with 4Traits… at Dupont Circle, drawing friends and strangers at dusk… drawing kids at Moorenko’s ice cream shop in Silver Spring… at 88 Degrees Dub Sessions at Gallery Lounge. 4Traits continue to evolve with each new opportunity.
Featured: In addition to free public appearances, 4Traits have been featured at Arts Alley in Silver Spring, monthly at 88 Degrees Dub Sessions at Gallery Restaurant & Lounge, and at Gallery Neptune in Bethesda. An article about the group was featured in the DC Examiner (July 15, 2006), the Bethesda Gazette (August 16, 2006) and the Washington Post (August 17, 2006).
