From the opening guitar loop of "Mercurial Girl" to the trippy Melotron vibe of "Between Two Floors", 5 Star Fall doesn’t do anything the obvious way. Not in this lifetime anyway. If it can be manipulated or played with, these restless Canadian lads are ready to get their hands dirty, calling into service everything from retro analog effects pedals and Kraftwerk-era drum machines to self-sampling and the most current software. But enough with the boring technical stuff. These guys rock with a passion... just not in your average way. As Harry Houdini might have said to Tangerine Dream... Nothing is what it seems, mein Liebling.
Gordon Deppe, of 80s innovators the Spoons, remains on lead vocals and guitar, experimenting with his collection of effects boxes and toys like never before. With hits like Nova Heart, Romantic Traffic and Arias & Symphonies behind him, Gordon emerges with a brand new album that is fresh and current, yet undeniably his own. Tom Lewis, formerly the musical director and bassist for Fefe Dobson and Amanda Marshall, covers the bass-end and back-up vocals, sometimes pulling synth-like groans from his old beat up Fender. Michael Shotton, of Von Groove, drums, sings back-up and throws a heavier rock flavor into the mix. 5 Star Fall’s debut album "Automatic Ordinary" is a ride through inner and outer space, a place where lo-fi and hi-fi collide. "Put your headphones on...and slip into the afterglow..."
Such a wonderful show at Tattoo on Thursday!! I'm sure I speak for everyone in the room when I say 'THANKS'. It was also great to hear a new song - I like it!! I'm going to put up some pics later today - I've got some good ones!!
Check it out! I wrote a free book on music production! It's for total beginners, but if you aren't new to music production, maybe you'll still learn something... at least you can send it to your friends who always want to ask you a billion questions about music production! It's totally free too; my goal with this is to accumulate as many BFF's as possible.
Hi 5 Star Fall. Just want to say I think Gordon Deppe is a Canadian treasure. Hope it doesn't sound strange, but I think he's at his best writing "science fictiony" songs, like Nova Heart and No Electrons -- and now with Between 2 Floors! It's crazy that this band isn't signed!
Wow... definitely glad you told me to check your band out! I really love everything about the sound.
So I gave a msg to the coordinator of the Wild Ball, and just waiting to hear back from him. I'll keep you posted. Hopefully it all works out. And if and when I see you there, be prepared to autography a copy of this cd for me. :)
