Hailed as friendly, unpretentious, idealistic and highly skilled by the New Yorker, eighth blackbird is widely lauded for its unusual performing style often playing from memory with virtuosic and theatrical flair and its efforts to make new music accessible to wide audiences. It has been featured on CBSs Sunday Morning, in the New York Times, and on several NPR news programs. Highlights of the ensembles 2005-06 tenth anniversary season included a widely-acclaimed tour of California, a performance at New Yorks 92nd Street Y, and the groups debut performance at Boston's renowned Celebrity Series. In past seasons eighth blackbird has played in South Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, and throughout the United States, including appearances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. During the 2006-7 season eighth blackbird makes its Houston debut and returns to Philadelphia and Los Angeles, as well as playing at The Kitchen, New York Citys famed performance space. Since its founding in 1996, eighth blackbird has been active in commissioning new works from eminent composers most notably Frederic Rzewski and George Perle as well as ground-breaking works from Jennifer Higdon, Derek Bermel, David Schober, Daniel Kellogg, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, and the Minimum Security Composers Collective; the ensemble looks forward to premiering new commissions by Steve Reich and Bang on a Can composers Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe in spring 2008. The ensemble has won numerous competitions, including the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Concert Artists Guild Competition, and is now in residence at both the University of Richmond and the University of Chicago. Its fourth CD release on the Cedille label, titled strange imaginary animals, will be released in November 2006. eighth blackbird is represented by ICM Artists, Ltd.
Ca fait chaud au coeur, au ventre et aux pieds, c'est presque comme une amourette en tongs sur la plage ensoleillée, sauf que c'est à la rentrée, que ça groove plus et que c'est à la sortie du métro Croix de Chavaux ;-)

Great show in Ann Arbor today. I was a little disappointed to only see parts of the group play, however, Thomas Ades writes some genius stuff, so what the heck. I also would have liked to get a new t-shirt, however, I didn't see any vending going on. Great stuff though, thanks!
I just wanted to let you know, that a new track of mine is waiting for your oppinion. It's called "run the self" and its the first track after a decade of music production, that I sung myself.
If you like it, you can DOWNLOAD IT in high quality FOR FREE. just check out my blog for the link and have fun ;O)
“If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music. ... I get most joy in life out of music.”
The Harris is a great place to hear music -- the acoustics are terrific and the crowd last night was silent and attentive -- not even the rounds of coughing one hears between movements at Symphony Center concerts (where I sometimes fear I am listening to music in a TB ward).
eighth blackbird was terrific, as always! There were three pieces by composer Stephen Hartke on the program. The first was Meanwhile: Incidental music to imaginary puppet plays. this was a very creative piece with interesting acoustic effects (changing the sound of the piano by manipulating strings manually with pads to sound like a Vietnamese hammered dulcimer) and percussive sounds (gong dipped in an out of a water bath and Flexatones). This piece shows off the groups ability to stage a piece by moving around and forming different constellations of performers. This has the effect of focusing the audience's attention on the interplay between certain instruments at various points.
This was followed by "The Horse with the Lavender Eye" and featured only three members of the group on violin, piano and clarinets. This piece had various inspirations franging from R. crumb cartoons, Japaense court music, an dLoony Tunes cartoons. The first movement was played with just the performer's left hand. This was quite interesting as I didn't know one could play the violin with just one's left hand -- kudos to Matt Albert. After intermission, during which time we had been encouraged by Matt to study the text of the music to be song by the the five member Hilliard Ensemble but which most people used to chat or check out the eighth blackbird concessions (caps, t-shirts, temporary tattoos and CDs), we heard Tituli. Besides the five male singers, we heard violin and two percussionists. My ability to read or recognize words in Latin and Greek is about nil so I could not understand a word that was song. The music was quite beautiful but I have to confess that I found it a bit sopori
