Aaron Lumley (1981) is a double bass player working primarily in the musical fields of improvisation and instant composition. In the summer of 2006, after more than a decade of playing guitar, Aaron discovered a deep affinity for the double bass. Since the spring of 2007, Aaron has focused solely on playing the bass.
Aaron's musical education has been largely self-directed: assembled from practical experience, the knowledge shared by friends, record collections, and the occasional private lesson. However, In 2008 and 2009 (thanks to the generous assistance of the Canada Council for the Arts), Aaron travelled to the Netherlands to study with one of his main inspirations for taking up the bass, Wilbert de Joode.
Currently, Aaron can be found working in a wide array of musical contexts. In addition to solo performances, Aaron works in regular duos with violinist David Prentice, drummer Mike Gennaro, and dancer Neil Sochasky. He also plays bass with a jazz trio called The Swyves, is a member of the AIMToronto Orchestra, and works regularly with many members of Canada's improvised music community. Aaron's bass playing will be featured on upcoming recordings by Ronda Rindone's Quorum and the Kyle Brenders Sextet (scheduled for release in 2010 on Porter Records). Aaron self-released a solo cdr entitled "Hawks in the City" on his Tone Wood imprint in 2009

Also let me know if you're ever coming to Germany again because I'd love to hang out and maybe even do some playing. Great to hear from you!

It's the way you play that makes it . . . Play like you play. Play like you think, and then you got it, if you're going to get it. And whatever you get, that's you, so that's your story. -- Count Basie
