MUSIC - I started playing guitar at 16 and have always loved singing. Finished High School, started working in a music shop, did four years at University Studying Graphic Design, continued to work in a record store and decided to make music for a living...
I got my start in bands spending 6 years fronting the roots/rock trio Stylus77,/b> which later became Seven Suns. We released a mini-album "Stylus77" on Capital recordings and recorded an album that remains unreleased to this day...
I was chosen to participate in the RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY in Seattle 2005, made some great music and met some new friends. Released a solo EP NOISE IN YOUR STEREO" in New Zealand to take with me to the academy to show people my new found musical direction...
In 2005 I was a part of the "Return of FLY MY PRETTIES", a project put together by The Black Seeds front man Barnaby Weir. The project brought together a group of songwriters and musicians to form a "supergroup" of sorts, resulting in a live show which was recorded and filmed then released as a CD/DVD album soon after. My song "Get Out" was definitely a crowd pleaser and convinced me to quit my band and start a new musical journey...
2006 was spent touring with FLY MY PRETTIES and doing regular gigs around town with friends. Then came a band I created that was the spawn of these new ideas. With me behind the MPC, playing guitar and singing, alongside good friends Pet Johnson (Bass) and LP (aka Lisa Preston on Vocals) we started jamming as SONS OF PUHA. Influenced by Hip Hop beat makers, club dj's and soul singers we jammed out live improvised sets at local spots in Wellington...
With my MPC as the centre of attention in my bedroom studio and my guitars not far from it I wrote and recorded my debut album. "OUR PLACE" was released on May 1st 2007 in New Zealand on Loop Recordings Aot(ear)oa. The album was written, recorded, sung, played and produced by myself with the acception of some bass guitar by close friend Rio Hemopo (TRINITYROOTS, SCRIBES OF RA...) and some horns played by Warren Maxwell (TRINITYROOTS, LITTLE BUSHMAN...) from an old SEVEN SUNS recording.
2007... After successfully touring "Our Place" in NZ I moved to London to live. I hit the ground running touring UK and Europe with FAT FREDDYS DROP as one of their backing singers. The tour was a great start to my move abroad and meant playing sold out shows around the UK (London's Astoria (singing alongside Alice Russell), Bournemouth, Nottingham, Glastonbury), Garance Reggae Festival in Paris and Fritz Club in Berlin. We also did some recording for an I-Tunes EP for Freddys at RAK Studios in London that may one day see a release...
August 2007, I was invited to be part of another Red Bull Music Academy project entitled "A Class of it's Own" bringing together previous participants and lecturers from the RBMA for a two week recording session in Cologne, Germany. This saw me hanging with the likes of Steve Spacek, Theo Parrish, Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 313), The Mizell Brothers, Om'mas Keith (Sa-Ra Creative Partners), Black Spade, Skymark, Andreya Triana and many more... We wrote and recorded a bunch of tunes that have since been released as a 2x12" Promo only vinyl pack...
2008 saw me getting stuck in to London life, new beats, new songs, new shows, new collaborations, new ideas, new home! I played many live gigs with Andreya Triana (Singer on Flying Lotus's "Tea Leaf Dancers") providing the guitar, looped beats and backing vocals for her live shows. I played many of my own shows in London, Rome, Amsterdam and Moscow and started chipping away at new material for both my solo projects and new collaborations. "Our Place" featured on the compilation "Supperclub - Jealousy" and Theo Parrish released "Chemistry" on 12" which features me singing backing vocals and playing guitar...
2009... new album in the works, Sons of Puha recordings getting prepared to see the light of day, more remixes, more shows, more collaborations, adidickpresentsthebeats side-project of instrumental wonky beats in the works... new direction... stay tuned...
Our remix is featured on the new Mr Confuse album titled ”Feel The Fire: The Remixes” available digitally! Remix artists include Smoove, Lack Of Afro, Una Mas Trio, The Uptown Felaz etc..

THE DIARY Volume 1.5 (20 Years of the Remix) now available for free download at WWW.MUSICOFSUBSTANCE.COM!
“This CD just shows how much Chris Read knows about historic Hip Hop production techniques - Its just a shame he wasn't creating this stuff during the eras he's covering as we would probably rate the man as being up there with Paul C, Pete Rock, Premier and all! - I can't think of another Hip Hop CD I've played so much in years” (ANDY SMITH - PORTISHEAD)
"Chris continues the rap anthology concept of his super-dope 'The Diary' megamix in the shape of a remix project, re-lacing acapellas from 89-2009 with historically accurate beats. 'The Diary 1.5' serves as a great platform for Chris to showcase his ample beat-making skills whilst referencing those who've inspired him." (DJ WOODY - FORMER WORLD ITF CHAMPION)
“Wicked! The perfect companion to The Diary Mixtape. Shows an impressive knowledge of sounds from all eras.” (MR THING - FORMER WORLD DMC CHAMPION)
"Crazy! This is Rap History in the making. Chris proves his production skills on this one to the fullest. A wonderful and refreshing journey through all eras of hip hop. Double thumbs up!" (MARC HYPE - FORMER ITF CHAMPION)
