Formed in the eclectic musical hotbed of Asheville, NC, in the fall of 2008, Agobi Project fuses elements of jazz, electronica, drum n' bass, hip hop, funk, and IDM. Their original compositions channel everyone from John Scofield to Aphex Twin, but it's their ability to improvise that sets them apart. Live, the chemistry of these young musicians -- Andrew Kirk on guitar, Nick Wankel on drums/SPD and David Krantz on laptops/bass synth -- is undeniable. The band is making a name for itself locally and regionally with epic shows that seamlessly meld live instrumentation and electronics. It's a highly danceable mix, and the group sees their enthusiastic crowds as partners in exploration. "The crowd is the fourth member of the band," says Krantz. "We learn from how the crowd reacts, and we in turn react to them. You have to be able to make people move."
Partners in the exploration also include a growing number of national artists who have joined the band on stage, including the famed emcee Peg Leg, and percussionist Chuck Morris from Lotus. They have also shared performances with artists like Shpongle, Eliot Lipp, Telepath, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, The Egg, Ott, Two Fresh and Toubab Krewe. The list of partners joining them in their musical journey is sure to expand in the near future, as the band plans to tour regionally and record an album this summer.
