aheadphonehome was once just lonely old phil laidlaw and a bunch of noisy machines. now it's a house of fun! now it's a five piece! new machine replacements are phil's old sparring partner pete schnapps, ex-iron-on skin smasher, coaxer and caresser marieca page, bass is in the safe hands of adrian buildings melt (ex rialto decibel choir) and coops of toy balloon infamy is minister in charge of stranger things.
this was what someone said about the first album:
In The Static, the debut album for Brisbane-based Aheadphonehome (aka Phillip Laidlaw), is a sublimely noisy convergence of glitch electronica textures and subverted indie singer-songwriter melodies. While such a description may conjure up images of Radiohead’s Kid A or Trent Reznor’s recent Year Zero (and there a definitely shades of those two recordings at times), the truth of the matter is closer to My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless remixed by electronica guru Christian Fennesz.
In tracks like ’X’ and ’Private Bars’, ringing guitars float through layers of shifting digitised rhythms, swathes of ambiences, abstract and distended samples of static and field recordings, while vocals and lyrics float ephemerally throughout the banquet of noise, with a result as effected as it is affecting. Unlike other electronic/rock fusionists (UNKLE, The Postal Service et al), Laidlaw is less concerned with importing electronica into rock, and more interested in importing indie textures into his glitch-laden ambience.
This egalitarian perspective allows Laidlaw to draw upon the full range of sounds at his disposal and craft a stunningly detailed and unique exercise in textural engagement, grounded emotionally by indie-rock’s evocative sentiments, but not limited by them. Stunning.

the new stuff is under heavy construction for a december 08 debut. keep an ear out.
Brisbane outfit Toy Balloon will release their debut album Toy Division on
November 8 through Lofly Records, and to celebrate will perform an east coast
launch tour throughout November.
Formed in 2007, Toy Balloon was
originally a fledgling two-piece made up by Nimai Etheridge’s uniquely melodic
wall-of-sound guitar and Greg Cooper’s beautiful sequenced electronic
compositions. The band have since matured into a four piece featuring Chloe
Cooper (Mr Maps) on key boards and Ben Green on drums.
The album was
recorded and mixed at the Lofly Hangar in Brisbane, a DIY performance space that
Toy Balloon has been an integral part of creating. Fostering emerging artists
and left-of-centre music, the Hangar acts as a performance space, recording
studio, and meeting place; and has resulted in a record with a rich, layered
sound reminiscent of New Order, Mogwai, Boards of Canada, and LCD
Soundsystem.

Friends... we are new on the Brisbane live scene and are desirous of gigs. We will play anywhere for anyone.
If you're a little low and need cheered up, we will play in your lounge. Maybe you have a gig coming up and need some support. Nothing too big or small.
"...it’s like Kid Strange and Urban Blitz from the Doctors of Madness at
their most morose played Overhang Party, or a mogadon’d Peter Hammill
jamming with Van Der Graaf’s Graham Smith. Elsewhere, the singular
desolation is most reminiscent of the most down down moments of Nico’s
THE MARBLE INDEX or even of Jesse Colin Young’s The Youngbloods at
their most mercurial. But the Scrapes are still so original their music
ultimately don’t sound like nobody but themselves." Julian Cope
