Industrial/World Music = = Alcalica plays modern Mediterranean music with traditional instruments allied to new technologies for a unique sound.
Alcalica was founded in a Berlin cellar in 2004 by a musician and a visual artist. Leonidas
Danezos (Gr/UK) has set up several recording studios and produced for musicians in
Athens and London for 15 years from hard core squat scene to pop, he assembles,
produces, mixes and plays 5 instruments on stage: Persian santoor, Greek baglamas,
synthesizer, drum machines, samplers; he creates illusions through rhythmic
manipulations. Julie Loi (B/D/I) trained as a teacher, an administrator and politician,
became a painter and poet, she develops the words and images, sings her poems in
several fluent languages and plays the kalimba.
One of the duo’s many particularities is that they welcome a third person for
gigs and recordings to insufflate a new energy to the music or stage visuals. Currently working with violinist Michalis Vrettas who lifts the sound with mastery.
Since 2008, they are switching their base between Berlin and Mytilini, on Lesvos Island,
where they are setting up a solar-powered studio and advocate open European borders.
