Over time I've soaked up influences from every source imaginable, so it would be pointless to name them all. I could start with naming the Beatles, but I guess the same goes for most musicians these days. Any songwriter you can imagine who plays an instrument and performs their own material has probably made an impression on me in some way, but some of the more prevelant influences though would be Nick Drake, Ink Spots, Elliott Smith, Joni Mitchell, Irving Berlin, Elvis Costello, Patty Griffin, Steve Earl, The Everly Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Leadbelly, Ella Fitzgerald and Jim Croce.
(I could go on, but won't)
Sounds Like
Pete Yorn, Josh Ritter, The Jayhawks, Nick Drake, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Wallflowers, and Elliott Smith.
After a year-long hiatus from music, Houston songwriter Lee Alexander is back again and has just released his second CD “Mayhaw Vaudeville.” A quasi-conceptual album, “Mayhaw Vaudeville” is the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut album “Out of Place” of 2006. Like previous works, the new album contains the same lyrical depth and poignant wit. “Mayhaw Vaudeville” is saturated with storytelling and a distinctively rustic Texas flavor, while skillfully skirted with contemporary pieces as well.
Drawing from an influential palette of Elvis Costello, Ink Spots, Patty Griffin, Steve Earle, and The Beatles, Alexander’s catchy melodies and razor sharp lyrics have placed him as winner in the 2007 Independent Music Awards, a regional finalist in the 2007 Mountain Stage Newsong Folk Festival, and a semifinalist in the 2005 UK Songwriting Contest. Alexander has also been a featured artist in Performing Songwriter Magazine, the 2007 Mardi Gras Festival, the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus 2006 Summer NAMM Showcase, the 2006, 2007, and 2008 Houston Press Music Awards, the 2006 Houston Fair Compilation, and the 2006 Houston International Music Conference and Festival, as well as being a featured artist on Sonicbids.
A conscientious observer, Alexander's songs do not shy away from addressing political issues. He also continues to donate a portion of performance proceeds to human rights initiatives through Amnesty International and the Adopt-A-Minefield program.

It was my pleasure to add "Mayhaw Wine" to my radio playlist (playing independent music commercial-free 24x7) and introduced it on my weekly podcast. The direct link to the show is: http://indiemusicsampler.com/2009/09/25/ims-151/
Dear Lee, Thanks for the friendship. Beautiful work sir. I really enjoyed your songs and your sound. Exemplary musicianship and writing. I'm sure I'll be back for many more listens. I invite you to come on over and check out my songs sometime. I recently posted the final tracks to my CD "East of Eden". I'd be very open to any feedback you might have. Best of luck with your new album. Cap Wilhelm-Safian

We're trying to get the final showcase slot at the 'Big Sound' Summit in Brisbane this September. They're offering the final slot to one act on Triple J's Unearthed, so if you like our music we have decided to give a free download @ http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Artists/View.aspx?artistid=14312 or just click on the banner below. And we ask you in return if you can rate & leave a review of our tunes as these two things are what they will be looking at when deciding. We'd really appreciate it!
Your new stuff sounds amazing, buddy. Especially loving "Okemah Moon," and I can't get "Balinese Room" out of my head. Great stuff, buddy. Can't wait to get the new record.
