Amsterdam hail from the city of Liverpool and were formed by poet/songwriter/guitarist/humanist Ian Prowse. The official debut album 'The Journey' was released in 2005 on Beat Crazy Records and spawned a number 32 hit single of the same name. The follow up 'Does this train stop on Merseyside?' reduced the great John Peel to tears on air each time he played it.
Irish legend Christy Moore is also currently doing his own superb version. The song is now widely regarded as an all time classic.
The third single 'Taking on the world' went onto the Radio 2 playlist and won an unprecedented five mornings on the run on the Breakfast show competition against that weeks other releases.
Amsterdam are also famed for their incendiary live performances. So much so that none other than Elvis Costello has used the lads as his backing band on 'The Jonathon Ross TV show'.The boys have also stormed Janice Longs Radio 2 live performance shows on three separate occasions! In fact Amsterdam have stolen the show at the famous 'Mathew Street festival' in Liverpool these past two years.
Each month I feature unsigned Liverpool Bands on my player - hope you and your friends will come over and listen to the bands on there and show some support by adding them as friends - cheers, Tony
Just put 10 great new songs on the player including The Little Hydes, The White Widows, Mercury 13 and dance act EQ. Add to that some great acoustic tracks and you have a snap shot of the Liverpool Music scene - Tony
Hey! I play "Does This Train Stop On Merseyside?" in my October show for Dandelion Radio - The online radio station inspired by John Peel!
This month's show commemorates the fifth anniversary of the great man's passing, every other track is one which John (& probably only John) played at least a few times on his BBC Radio 1 show.
To listen, go to our website:
http://www.dandelionradio.com
and click on one of the "Listen Live" links on the front page.
You will be able to hear my show on most days for the whole of the month! Plus a host of other shows playing an eclectic variety of new and unreleased music, as well as exclusive sessions by Peel legends! See schedule on website for details!
Hi just to let you know that the new batch of bands are up on the player for May - some dance music, lots of guitars and a great track which reclaims the Uke from George Formby and turns it into a thing of beauty - Tony
I've heard Christy's version of Does This Train...interesting...and he's a fine chap, but for me yours is always going to be tops. Was actually talking about you, Ian, last week on this very subject (and making a lame attempt with a Linn version - ;-) - ) to Billy Mealey whilst up your way!
This years festival is headlined by Billy Bragg (Friday), Seth Lakeman (Sunday) and Peatbog Faeries (Saturday) with many more top artists also performing incl the award winning The Demon Barbers and Henry Priestman.
