"I recently read that it doesn't matter where you are in life but that you are taking steps towards your dream. Music is my dream. Since I was 2 years old singing with "Rocking Robin" (on repeat for 2 hours straight), to an adolescent trying to wail like Whitney ( my poor parents), to today where I am the conglomerate of so many musical intentions and dreams. Music is my meditation, the voice of my soul, and the calling of my heart. Two of the most powerful forces I have ever found are music, and silence. And so I seek out both actively. Silence is the drawing board of music. It is where the potential of vast melodies incubate until one day with gratitude they are revealed by grace. I dream of finding that voice, that voice which can relay clarity of this human experience. I will ever be learning, discovering, and growing myself; music is the way I tell my story."
Over the past 2 years Thiessen has worked in the Calgary music scene as a vocalist for Blue Rhino, 8 piece Rand B band as well as Blue Stranger, a jazz trio she began after graduation in 2007. Grateful for the community and wisdom in these ensembles Thiessen always knew that her real passion lay not just in singing songs, but in the creation of song.
It was March 2008 when Amy Thiessen officially stepped into the Calgary music scene as singer songwriter, hosting a weekly music night at Oolong Tea House. Now a thriving event, the night regularly draws some of Calgary’s finest musician as well as talent from across the country.
In Dec of 2009 Thiessen released “Tell me” a 4 song EP after hearing one of scratch tracks on CBC radio. “That’s when I knew it was time for me to get into the studio” says Thiessen who has received airtime on both CKUA and CBC radio with her EP.
2009 has proven to be a year of tremendous growth and opportunity. Thiessen recently shared the stage with the great Ben E King in a concert at Knox United Church in Calgary. The event was the kick off for the “Stand up for the DI” campaign. This campaign, to generate awareness about the Calgary drop in Centre and its clients, includes a video as well as a recording of the timeless classic “Stand by me” both including the vocal stylings of Miss Thiessen.
This summer hails the first tour season Thiessen as she joins Calgary artist Sidney York, and Edmontonian Kaley Bird on a cross Alberta tour this July. She will be joining York again in August touring Canada’s eastern provinces. With a coast to coast goal Thiessen is planning a third tour in September with Kaley Kinjo from Calgary to the west coast.
A fusion of influence from Mantra to Jazz, Amy is continuously astounded at the ability for music to transcend boundaries and heal the heart; a goal she actively pursues in all wakes of life. With a voice that resonates to the core Amy delivers lyrics that act as a gateway for the listener into themselves . She looks forward to continuing her journey into music and hopes to begin recording a full length album in the fall of 2009.
