I was 19 years old, working in an office as a negotiator when reality hit me hard. What am I doing with my life in a job that means nothing to me?
I new that all I had ever wanted to be was a musician that could make a living out of writing songs.
A few days before, after a heavy night of clubbing with friends in my home town of Bristol, I had played to them a new song of mine called ‘Wait for me’. It was one of the first songs I had written that I was truly proud of. It was a song that reflected a point of time in my life when I lived for escaping from the real world at the weekends, and the depth of change it was having on me and the friends around me. In the early hours of the morning it got the reception that gave me the confidence to feel I could make it as a singer songwriter.
So that day at work, when reality became clear, I stood up in the middle of the office and announced that this job was not for me and I was going to make a career for my self as a musician. I shook everybody’s hands goodbye and left the office for the last time.
A great friend of mine Dan had just moved to Amsterdam doing a 3 month placement as part of his degree. Within a few hours of leaving the office I had booked a flight and was making arrangements to crash on his floor for a few weeks. I hoped this would give me time to work out a plan and gain perspective on how to start my life as a musician.
The next day I arrived in Amsterdam with a credit card in my pocket, a bag of clothes over my shoulder, and my acoustic strapped to my back. That day I became a singer songwriter and I let my music consume me … I’ve never looked back.
Amsterdam turned out to be the perfect place to immerse myself in writing. One song, ‘Sitting on the edge’ I still play now.
I spent the days writing and the evenings clubbing and playing pool. 4 weeks later with my credit card maxed out and several new songs penned in my book, I returned to the UK to start playing the local music scene.
10 years on and there’s too many stories to list them all. We’ve all heard about the bands that split up because different musical directions tore them apart. I was in a band like that for 7 years following Amsterdam.
After taking the advice of a producer I met in Bristol, he suggested the best way to play some of the bigger music venues and move on from open mic nights was to have a band behind me.
For the majority of that time I loved it. It was one of the best times of my life.
I was playing with some great friends; one of them was my best friend Si who I’d always jammed with since the age of 12, so when I decided to leave the band it was one of the hardest decisions to make even though I new it was the right move for everyone. 2 members of the band had also already left a few years before.
We had several offers and great opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of, especially over the first few years we were together. We were young and thought the big money Major Label deal was just around the corner. When the Major deal never arrived we were all kicking our selves we didn’t go with one of the Indies we had been offered earlier. For the last few years in the band finishing songs seemed like they took forever. I would write something new over a weekend and then we’d spend a month or more working out how the rest of the song should sound. It got to the point where it seemed that nobody was enjoying the process anymore.
So after 7 years of trying to make it with the band I decided to make the move to London to start out again as a singer songwriter, the direction I had intended from the start. I still keep in touch every week with my best friend Si. He also moved to London shortly afterwards and set up a fantastic project of his own called Sunharbour.
I’ve had some great highlights these last 3 years. Supporting Sting, The Automatic and the Zutons was incredible.
I’ve been played by Tom Robinson on Radio 6, and as I write this biog, 30th October 2009, my first ever release ‘Tides EP’ has come out today on I-Tunes. It’s been 10 years in the making, although pretty much every song on it I’ve written this year.
I’ve recorded and produced my EP from my home in London. I’m playing all the instruments except for some fantastic string arrangements I’ve written together with the Mizenus Quartet. The Quartet is made up of girls from the Royal Philharmonic, BBC Welsh, and Glasgow Symphony Orchestra’s.
I’ve also been working with Adrian Hopkins on some of the string arrangement’s that will appear on the Album next year. One of the arrangements he’s done features on the EP in the song ‘Back on my feet’.
In some of my live shows I am playing with a bass player, Arthur Bassingham, and a drummer, Mike Terrell. They will also be appearing on the Album next year.
I love what I do. I can’t stop. It’s my release and it’s all that I know that really gives me sense and purpose in this life.
I’m going to keep writing songs no matter what comes of this. Songs that may one day touch someone at a delicate time, allowing them feel at ease as music has done for me so many times in my life. My songs have a personal meaning in every note and lyric that I sing. I write because that’s what I feel has to come out of me.
It’s just what I have to do.
