ANDY REED BIO

I have to say I got the music bug as a kid. I took piano lessons for about five years and then quit when I thought it wasn’t cool. Years later I would appreciate those lessons. I have great memories driving around in my dads care listening to oldies 96. Hearing songs from The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and other classic bands really fueled my love for music. It was in high school that I started listening to music a little differently. I had gotten into The Beatles a lot and I really didn’t know why at that point. I also listened to your typical 90s high schooler stuff like Pearl Jam and Bush but for some reason, those bands didn’t stick. Right after I graduated high school, my cousin Danny was in an original rock band called Acoustic Fields. I was in awe. I wanted to buy a guitar, write songs, and start a band just like them. So I took the last $110 of my student loan money, went to Herter Music Center, and bought a Samick acoustic. I was so excited to finally have a guitar. Learning to play was a lot of fun.. I couldnt put the thing down. I started a band about 6 months after I started playing. The band was called Hatrick. We played all originals cause I wasn’t good enough to play anyone elses songs yet. I have no idea what the songs were about at this point. But I’m pretty sure they were horrible. After that I really started writing acoustic based songs and bought a little 4 track to record them. I even went into the studio and recorded an acoustic album that NO ONE is allowed to hear. I don’t even have it anymore. I was 20 years old when I recorded that record. I started playing a lot of acoustic shows around Kalamazoo (while attending WMU for a semester). My guitar skills were getting to be ok by the time I was 21. I was into singing harmonies a lot as well. I joined the E. Lansing band “Last Girl on Earth” This was my first real band. We went into a big studio and recorded, we played nice clubs and opened for some cool bands. This is when I met a lot of people that I would forge important relationships with. I met Donny Brown of The Verve Pipe, The Atomic Numbers, The 19 Wheels, and lots of other great bands that would have a huge effect on me. Donny got me into a lot of cool pop music, Artists like Brendan Benson and Jason Falkner to name a couple. I really developed a deep love with pop music at this time. I took in a lot of information and really studied. I finally decided to start my own pop band. I recruited my brother to play bass and started writing power pop songs, I would record all the parts on my 4 track and then we would learn them. We had a few line up changes but we finally came into our own when Todd McMahan joined. We were known as the Haskels. We played all around the state of Michigan. We were known for our catchy songs and up tempo performances. We created a slight buzz in our area and were picked up by the local label Bullfrog Records. WOW someone is gonna give us money to make a record. We are gonna be huge. We were excited. Our buds from the Atomic Numbers recorded a song at Brendan Bensons home studio and said we should see about Brendan recording us. I couldn’t believe it. Brendan called us back and said he would make a record with us. This was a dream come true. Working with Brendan was one of the most memorable moments in my life. I was sitting side by side with a pop genius and I was just some dumb kid thinking I was the shit and really I didn’t realize the importance of it all until much later. Brendan had a kick ass studio with tons of vintage instruments and old guitars. He offered great production ideas and really should me how to build and produce a song. To this day I still love thinking about that time with Brendan. Our record was released and we were on top of the world. Our cousin Danny joined us on guitar and we went out and played gigs for 3 years or so. Then, just like any band, we broke up and The Haskels were done. My relationship with Donny was growing on a personal and musical standpoint. We were becoming good friends and he was really starting to help me a lot with my songs. We even started a project together called Macaw. We both loved Paul McCartney so we decided to write and record some songs in that style. We still have to finish that damn record. My brother and I joined a couple of our buddies from the Atomic Numbers and started a band called The Rioteers. I was the lead guitar/harmony guy. We had a lot of fun with our buddies. The travel had gotten to be too much so we had to quit. We did record a sweet e.p. though. Which brings us to The Reed Brothers. I had bought a Pro Tools recording setup and just started recording everything I wrote. I had drums setup in the basement so Id just hop on and record everything myself. The songs had a similar feel so my brother and I started playing as a duo and released a record. Which lead me to today, as a solo artist. Not much more to say here. I have a pretty kick ass studio. I put out a couple of records and I am doing exactly what I love to do. I know I’m leaving out a lot of details, Jasons toilet paper incident, the Cheap Trick show, hotel rooms in Chicago, etc. etc. but that’s ok. I’ve had a pretty good time the last 12 years. I feel like I’m doing my best work to date. So hopefully this is just the beginning of my story. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BUY FAST FORWARD ONLINE AT http://www.koolkatmusik.com/showproduct.aspx?productid=4787 or you can DOWNLOAD IT at------ Andy Reed

Hey Andy, Im closing the store in that location. East Lansing is a hard place for a small business to do business in. If your not right on the main drag your not going to get kids in the door, believe me Ive tried it all! I will keep ya posted, I am going to have all the vinyl at my house as well as new stuff on a more frequent basis. Ive made $300 in the last week and a half on Amazon, will have my own site soon under the Record Lounge as well. Keep in touch and if you need anything vinyl call 517-862-1976 or on here too.
