About me: Angela Yee started her career in radio thanks to a combination of good timing and great relationships. She heard that Sirius was hiring in their marketing department, and reached out to Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, hoping that he could connect her with an interview. Paul suggested that Angela audition for the job as co-host with radio veteran Cipha Sounds on Shade 45, the station he owns with Eminem. Angela quickly agreed, and focused all her attention on formulating and improving her on-air skills, and creating segments for the “Cipha Sounds Effect” morning show.
Soon, Angela earned a reputation for providing her listeners with the most exclusive rumor reports and groundbreaking interviews. She utilized the connections she developed from her 8 years in the music industry working for Wu-Tang Clan, urban clothing lines, and managing GZA to obtain intimate and provocative content. Soon, industry heavyweights like Jay-Z, Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Eminem, Chris Rock, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Jessica Alba, TI, and many others were featured on the show. The listeners would become heavily involved in the direction of each morning, with segments like “Don’t Quit Your Day Job” for unsigned rappers, “My Friend Wants to Know” for audience advice, and the invitation to have breakfast with the crew Friday mornings.
After only 2 years of honing her craft, Angela was awarded the opportunity to have her own weekly Monday night specialty show, ”Lip Service,” alongside renowned music editor and journalist Leah Rose. “Lip Service” is the only show of its kind, where Angela and Leah grill guests regarding their personal lives instead of the typical standard career questions. The show blossomed into one of the most popular, yet intimidating experiences for guests and the most entertaining for the listeners. Actors and artists like Akon, David Banner, Bow Wow, and Soulja Boy mingle alongside famous porn stars and female models to form explosive content, unlike anything else in radio.
Things continued to progress for Angela, and she was offered her own show during the coveted, high profile morning slot, “The Morning After with Angela Yee.” There are few females who have their own morning show in radio period, and even fewer who have the dedication and following of Angela Yee. Her straight to the point questions sometimes startle people, but her affable demeanor quickly puts them at ease. Her success in radio led to Angela branching into other areas, like host of “The Angela Yee Rumor Report” on Flow TV and on demand, and host of the “Online Hip Hop Awards” for sohh.com which aired on MTV Jams and online. Complex even dubbed her one of Hip-Hop’s Hottest Gossip Girls, while XXL stated that “Angela Yee has the internet going nuts… She’s killing the game right now.”
“I just feel incredibly fortunate to do something that I love. I get up every morning excited to go to work, and that makes people excited to hear me. I’m thankful that everything fell into place the way that it did. Now I’m just looking for the next challenge.”
The merger of Sirius and XM to form Sirius XM Radio, with a combined 19 million subscribers, may provide that challenge sooner than she thinks. But from what we’ve heard, she’s up for it!
