Since its inception in 1989, Anonymus has made its mark on the Quebec music scene. From the beginning, the Metal group has been well received while demonstrating its brutal sound and technique that has continually evolved over the years. Oscar Souto (vocals, bass) Daniel Souto (guitar, vocals) Carlos Araya (drums), Jef Fortin (guitar since 2006) and Marco Calliari (vocals, guitar from 1989 to 2006) have since widely travelled the roads of their country, participated in the deprivation of Mononc’Serge and continue today to ignite stages everywhere they go. These veterans of the Metal scene continue to proudly carry the torch after 20 years of chaos and barbaric music.
Forever hungry for Metal, Anonymus introduces itself for to the world for the first time in Ocotber 1994 with its first opus “Ni vu ni connu”, an angry and engaged endeavour of music that showcases their technical mastering as well as an accomplished sound quality. With explicit aggression and intelligent lyrics written in the language of Moliere, the group conquers the critics bringing together Quebec Metal fanatics.
Winner of a MIMI award for Best Metal/Rock Group in 1996 as well as prevailing in two competitions – Survival and the Polliwog Showcase – Anonymus find support from the industry and lands a record deal for its second album, “Stress”, with Disques MPV. Showing undeniable musical maturity, the members expose their roots with compositions in French, English, Italian and Spanish. Little by little, the group’s growing popularity is proven by numerous sold out shows and tours in support of such big name groups as Biohazard and Anthrax. Forging ahead, the group participates in several large-scale festivals across their home province such as the Francofolies, Polliwog and Woodstock en Beauce. A series of concerts in Mexico in support of Blind Guardian and two-time participation in the Milwaukee Metal Fest in Wisconsin all contributed to the growing international exploitation of Anonymus’ sound.
After having performed on the same stage as various cult groups, the quartet chose to expand its potential by associated with renowned producer Colin Richardson (Machine Head, Fear Factory, Carcass, Napalm Death, Sepultura) for the production of the album, “Instinct”. From this close collaboration, a daring project is born in 1999 that mixes classical music with the indiscretion of hardcore with touches of opera. With this, Anonymous was ready to conquer France with a tour alongside Watcha and Out.
Three years later, the group is determined to continue its global conquest with the release of “Deamonium”, an album heavy with bloody guitar riffs and provocative lyrics. In 2002, Anonymus crossed Canada to promote its music sprung from the fires of Hell. Creating a euphoric hold on metalheads, “Deamonium” is deemed best metal album of the year by many radio stations.
Following a more aggressive album that its previous, the group associates with the acrimonious Mononc’Serge for “L’Académie du Massacre”, an album of satirical humor that seduced fans with sales of over 15 000 copies. Known for their irreverence and juvenile delinquency, Anonymus and Mononc’s Serge continue their escapade on stage with this fifth album, a weapon of mass destruction, perpetuating the massacre over 18 months. This auditory carnage is followed by a love DVD, “La Pâques Satanique”, a black mass recorded at Metropolis in Montreal on March 27, 2005 that sold over 3000 copies.
Now as a trio rather than a quartet, Marco Calliari having recently left the group, Anonymous works double time over 2 years to offer the public acrimonious and liberating songs borne of a channelled rage to create “Chapter Chaos Begins”, an album of quality recorded by Jean-François Dagenais (Kataklysm, Misery Index) and mastered by Peter In de Betou (Messhuggah, Dimmu Borgir). With a new record contract with the Montreal label Galy Records and the search for a new guitarist, Jef Fortin, a wind of renewal blows through the group. With a death and hardcore vocal approach, Anonymus’ trash metal takes on a new musical direction while retaining the urgency and fury of previous albums. Returning to the front, the group is back in front of its public with “Chapter Chaos Begins”, earning a nomination in the category of Best Metal/Hardcore Album at the 2007 GAMIQ Gala 2007.
Five years following «L ‘Académie du Massacre and Anonymus relapses with Mononc’Serge for “Musique Barbare”, a project under the sign of metal and provocation. Always ironic, in suits for the occasion, prove in concert that they do not perform chamber music! The chic barbarians return to the stage with new compositions of efficient and thunderous melodies to the great pleasure of their fans who have been asking for more since their first collaboration.
Today, Anonymus no longer needs an introduction. Twenty years have passed since the group’s inception with over 1000 concerts and over 50 000 albums sold. To highlight their 20th anniversary, the group released “XX Metal, a CD-DVD containing the best of Anonymus to this day, unedited songs, a documentary and videos. In addition to this indelible souvenir that the group presents to their fans Anonymus offers a tour of high intensity across Quebec where they will be joined by Marco Calliari for this special event. An institution of Quebec Metal, Anonymus presents for the last 20 years, a passion for the back note and music of an unequalled power.
