"Antifaz sounds and feels like a late afternoon on a Caribbean beach with a glass of Mojito! A perfect album for those days that make you wish you were on vacation!" --Stereo77 (Filtered Sunshine Radio WPRK 91.5 FM Florida)
Antifaz members Gustavo Naranjo and Chet Samuel are two Latinos that come from different musical worlds. When an impromptu meeting occurred between the two, Antifaz was born to bring together their different Latin cultures and music backgrounds. Gustavo, a native of Mexico City, studied audio production in the U.S. and has collaborated on several music projects including recording and producing the electronic group Pascha (distributed by Universal Mexico). He has also exhibited his “sound art” at various galleries around the U.S and abroad. Chet, from Puerto Rico, started out his musical career by playing guitar for different reggae bands in Florida and soon after performed as lead vocal. Most recently Chet joined Grammy award winning reggae artist Burning Spear on his world tour.
Antifaz joins two musical styles from Latin America that has not lost its native roots. As Gustavo explains, “We are a new generation of Americans transplanted from other parts of the world bringing all kinds of musical styles together as one and mixing them with our American experience.” Its creators joined their talents in 2007 when they began to record their debut album Libre. The recording process happened swiftly and each of their styles melded with ease. As Gustavo describes “I brought the main structure of the song then Chet added on the guitar parts. Then we wrote the lyrics and vocal melodies as a team.” Not only were they able to bring their styles together but also created a unique and original sound that while not being Mexican or Caribbean still reflects its Latin background.
Antifaz is an organic hybrid of Latin beats and rhythms infused with down tempo electronica style. The nine tracks on their album Libre range from reggae to Latin house music to chill out. Antifaz joins all of these styles together by incorporating lush synthesizers with different percussion styles like in "Profundo” which showcases an unexpected R&B ballad with tribal syncopated beats. Antifaz also combines electronic beats with acoustic guitar melodies like in “Dulces Besos.” On the title track “Libre” there are layers of typical reggae sounds with an Afro-Cuban style bass line. Their natural blend of musical genres gives a laid-back vibe and a distinct sound to the album.
