Appel Direct are a Gypsy Swing band in the Manouche style, made famous by musicians like Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Solid, irresistible rhythms and fiery solos are the trademarks of the Gypsy Swing sound, which thrives today in the Gypsy communities of Europe.
Central to the sound are the driving chords provided by guitars, often accompanied by double bass pounding out the downbeat. Over this rhythm, the soloist, on guitar, violin or clarinet, weaves the magic.
Swing numbers, waltzes, bossa novas, romances, boleros, all are a part of the Gypsy music tradition, and all have their origins in European folk music, with an element of jazz thrown in. It's great music for a celebration, to convey the moods of life in the way that traditional music has done since the beginning of history.
