The sparkles that encrusted Funeral have been shined for Arcade Fire's hugely anticipated The Suburbs.
For fans, Suburbs channels the mainstream appeal of the band's debut but keeps the cryptic cleverness of Neon Bible, making for an aural out-of-body experience. "We Used to Wait" is certifiable radio gold with its striking piano chords and swoon-worthy choruses. Lyrically, its deprecation is as unforgettable as its melody. The band dips into muddied yet classic rock ("Month of May"), wanders into folk territory on their title track and harkens the token sound we know and love ("Ready to Start"). The Suburbs proves that Arcade Fire are still stirring in their own devastation, but they are willing to let us in a little.
