Gareth, Anne and Phil Gone walkabout, Circumnavigating Oz, Australia

Going for broke, starting from scratch with nothing at all, not even clothing, we intend to raise the necessary resources, bit by bit, without any cash ever changing hands, to set off on the 14,000 kms journey from Brisbane, around Australia, to arrive back again on Australia Day. We will discard all our possessions, relying wholly on the kindness of others to provide us with everything we need to navigate around the continent. At the end of our adventure we will keep nothing but our footage, pictures and stories. All we've been given, that we have not used, will be auctioned off, with proceeds going towards the promotion of Child Literacy. We will keep nothing for ourselves save the proof that Australians are fair dinkum the worlds friendliest people.
Books

Our chosen charity is Book Aid International. We believe books change lives. Books have definitely changed ours, inspiring ideas and creativity, giving us language skills, and aiding our education. Please make a donation here to give impoverished children a chance to change their lives too.

Book Aid have said. "Many thanks for choosing to support Book Aid International on your Australian adventure! It is very much appreciated and definietly one of the most imaginitive ways that money has been raised for us"

About me:

..

Three friends from around the UK have come together in Brisbane to set off on a circumnavigation of Australia, to raise money for a child literacy charity, Book Aid International and to write a book about their travels. With one small exception: They must start the trip from scratch, with nothing more than their trust in good will and generosity. They will start without any money, vehicle or even clothing. At least to begin with. The countdown begins on the 14th, and they have a week to collect all they need for the starting date, Sunday the 21st September, aiming to return to Brisbane on Australia Day. No easy ride.

Giving up their jobs, their homes, their comforts and all their possessions, they will circumnavigate this huge continent, with the help of Aussies nationwide. Needing help to start and even more to keep them going, the three will work on the premise of being as cheeky as they ‘can’t’, “when being as cheeky as we ‘can’ isn’t enough”. No cash can be earned, but they will work their way around, swapping their skills and willingness to try anything once.

They will be documenting their experiences online at their blog AS CHEEKY AS YOU CAN'T where anyone thinking of traveling in Australia can see their quirky take on what Oz has to offer. “We want to go to the out-of-the-way-places and experience the spirit of Australia, the people and their different lifestyles, doing work no one knows of or know little about and learning a lot along the way.”

Be it bee-keeping for a litre of milk or dressing up as meter maids for a tank of petrol, working on a llama farm for a bed for the night, or building stone walls, these Poms won’t back down from any challenge. “Although we might stay away from playing you at cricket”, says Phil. “The point of this is to get people involved, to have a good time and raise money for charity, this isn’t achievable without people’s participation. The Aussies are famous for being great company and good humoured, we think this is a great idea to showcase these qualities to the world”.

“All the Aussies we know are very friendly and have a great sense of humour. There’s nowhere else a trip like this could be possible”, says Gareth. The adventure is as much about the people they meet along the way as it is about the need to keep going. “We’re looking forward to seeing what happens on this journey. We are wholly reliant on goodwill and generosity here. But we have faith in Aussie mateship and hope to collect stories as we pass through a diversity of landscapes. At the end of this there will be a lot of people to thank!”

While promoting and raising funds for Bookaid International a child literacy charity, they will be visiting local communities hoping for a warm welcome. “We want to see the country as Australians see it. We’re guests in your backyard really, this is your home, we’d love you to show us around. It’s such a big place. There’s so much to see and do. It’s too easy for visitors to just go to the same places. We love the idea of being shown around Oz by the Aussies!”

They will be in Fortitude Valley Mall 9am Sunday 21st September, where they will ceremoniously remove their work clothes and don a black bin liner each. They will be there all day talking to the people of Brisbane before they start doing reviews and write ups that evening. “We only hope it won’t be too long before we are given a vehicle so we can leave for our first destination, heading north, after Brisbane.” Upon their return, everything that has been donated and things they have accumulated along the way will be auctioned off for Book Aid, finishing exactly as they started, but for their experiences and the money they raise for charity.
