Hey ASO: Atheist Student Organization, hope you're having a great day! Say, do you believe in God? If so, do you think it comes with a tangible science we can hope to understand one day, or should it remain a mystical concept? Also, how do feel about the odds of making contact with another intelligent species in the universe?

    ASO Event this Tuesday!

    Hey everyone,

Dr. McCormick is a philosopher of atheism and has one of the few undergrad courses on atheism in the country.
He has been published in The Improbability of God and Philo; also, here is a link to his blog which has tons of great arguments against the existence of god: http://www. atheismblog. blogspot. com/.

    Event details:

Dr. Matt McCormick on the Foundations of Atheism.

    12/02 (Tuesday) 1-3pm
    Hinde Auditorium (free).

    Sacramento State University

What is the difference between an atheist and an agnostic? Are both a kind of atheist? Can Christians and Jews and Muslim be atheists too? What are the foundations for Atheism? In large part, the failure of so many people to see that being an atheist is
a reasonable view arises from a failure to understand what it is. Dr. Matt McCormick, Philosophy, will discuss some distinctions and some arguments that cast light on atheism. Narrow atheism is the view that a particular kind of God, such as the Christian conception, does not exist. Wide atheism is the view that there are no gods at all. Negative atheism is to merely lack a belief in God. Positive atheism is to affirm that there is no God. A number of considerations can lead to atheism about the Christian God such as internal inconsistencies, inaccurate history, and moral objections. Wide atheism is often motivated by general doubts about magical phenomena, the supernatural, spiritual claims, and by the successes of science.

Hope to see some of you there!

    Best,

    Steve D.

    ASO Event this Friday!!!

Dan Barker: Godless – How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America's Leading Atheists

Dan Barker spent nearly two decades as an evangelical missionary before gradually "outgrowing" his religious beliefs. Today he is co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes separation of church and state, the removal of religion from public life, and public awareness of atheism.

Dan Barker's new book "Godless: How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America's Leading Atheists" tells his remarkable loss-of-faith story. The book will be on sale at the event, and Mr. Barker will be available to sign copies afterward.

11/14 (Friday) 1-3pm: Room 1015 Riverside Hall, Sacramento State University

Come out and support ASO and Dan Barker!!!

    See ya,

    --Steve Owen

Hey atheists, this is Steve in case you didn't know. Here is a great website that delineates all the immorality in the bible:

    http://www. evilbible. com/

    Here's a sample:

    5) Death to the Rape Victim (Deuteronomy 22:23-24 NAB)

If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her, you shall bring them both out of the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbors wife.

    7) Rape of Female Captives (Deuteronomy 21:10-14 NAB)

"When you go out to war against your enemies and the LORD, your God, delivers them into your hand, so that you take captives, if you see a comely woman among the captives and become so enamored of her that you wish to have her as wife, you may take her home to your house. But before she may live there, she must shave her head and pare her nails and lay aside her captive's garb. After she has mourned her father and mother for a full month, you may have relations with her, and you shall be her husband and she shall be your wife. However, if later on you lose your liking for her, you shall give her her freedom, if she wishes it; but you shall not sell her or enslave her, since she was married to you under compulsion.

Hey everyone, just a reminder that ASO is having a meeting this Friday at Round Table on campus (in the union). 11am-Noon.

If you plan on coming, head out back (outside) so we can have some room and ability to discuss and debate.

In case you didn't get Professor McCormick's message, we're going to be talking about "the general nature of proof as it functions in other contexts in our lives and how it fits with atheism."

For more background, check out Professor McCormick's blog:

    www. atheismblog. blogspot. com

Hope to see a bunch of you there!

PS -- I encourage you to drink a beer in order to feel "spiritual."

ASO's First Summer Meeting will be this Friday (June 20th) at the Round Table on Campus at 4pm.

We will have a guest speaker, Jane Huang, from Secular Students Alliance
who is going to talk about the SSA's resources, and how ASO can
leverage them. Resources include speakers and grant money.

Beer, pizza, and grant money, what more could an atheist want?

Hope to see a bunch of you come out this Friday! Come and support ASO and our guest speaker from SSA (who will be driving all the way out from Stanford for us).
