In an alternate version of the new Attack Formation video, "The Truth Moves Out", an easily overlooked single frame flashes about three minutes into the video. The image, a portrait of Spoon singer Britt Daniel taken by the video's director, Aubrey Edwards, recalls the Spoon video for "Small Stakes" in which Attack Formation friend and AFO member Har Mar Superstar appears. Upon further examination of the frame, we noticed that Britt is wearing a shirt that reads fi73. After much brainstorming we realized that backwards it reads 37if. According to undisclosed sources, Daniel would be 37 years old on his next birthday, bringing to mind the infamous "Paul is dead" hoax in which various hidden clues lead Beatles fans to believe that Paul McCartney was dead.
Is Britt Daniel dead?...we decided to find out.
Today, Spoon producer Mike McCarthy, who expressed interest in working with Attack Formation when we talked with him, was unable to reach Daniel by phone. "I haven't heard from him or seen him since SXSW, but he doesn't always return my calls." The often misunderstood, silent and brooding McCarthy became increasingly anxious on the phone when we explained why we were trying to contact Britt. "What the hell is going on? Is this some kind of joke?" at which time he asked us to hold on while he called Spoon founding member and drummer, Jim Eno to see if he had spoken to him recently. After several attempts, Jim was only able to reach him by text message and now in an exclusive transcript of those text messages,the truth behind "The Truth Moves Out" and the "37if" shirt is revealed.
"No, I'm not dead...LOL" Daniel wrote. "I'm more alive then I have ever been" he explained. "I've joined a cult. Well, it's not what most people would think of when they hear that word. It's an organization of sorts called "the eye" or "AFO" or "Attack Formation". It's an all-inclusive group within a scene; not a collective, more like a casual, musical family that you WANT to spend time with." He explained further, "While I was in Austin working on the new record, I was mourning the end of a relationship and was feeling down about everything including Spoon and where we were heading, our recent success and me doing soundtracks and stuff. I felt lost and I was starting to see how I some people might look at me as some stuck up rockstar who sold out. That's not me and my close friends know that. I'm a nice guy who happens to be in a sucessful band; I feel hurt when people misunderstand me in that way. We've worked hard to get where we are now; it didn't happen overnight. One day, I took a needed break from the studio and went shopping for a robe and slippers at Bed, Bath and Beyond and by chance, I ran into Ben Webster from Attack Formation and we started talking and getting to know each other. We walked over to Pet Smart together to look at the puppies, and shared our experience of how hard it is to break a band these days and hold it together, the pressures of being the perceived "leader" and "mastermind". He explained how they do things in his band, and after an hour with him, he invited me to join this music cult thing. The AFO took me in and the truth about myself and indirectly, my music, our music and music in general was revealed to me.
There is no scene really, it's just the same cliques we had in high school. The act of being cool is only a barrier, a way we put distance between ourselves and others we don't understand. Music belongs to everyone. "Take Music, Break Music" is one of the mantras of the organization. There are no rules; only the ones we create that say you can do this, but you can't do that. In Attack Formation, all ideas are welcome and explored, that's rare. Once you are a member, only way to get kicked out is by being a total asshole, a closed-minded and unforgiving person. We are over 200 members strong and growing. At first, I entertained taking a break from Spoon and devoting myself to writing and playing with Attack Formation for a while, but then Ben explained to me that there are several bands within the AFO and members still play in other outside bands too and the organization and it's message would be stronger by my participation and staying in spoon. In fact, there are several bands on the new record, but it's all Attack Formation too. Everyone brings something unique to the AFO, there is strength in numbers and diversity.
I feel reborn in a way, that's what my short appearance in the video is all about. Coming back from death... a rebirth of sorts. So yes, I am alive...in tune. The new Spoon record is a departure for us. Lyrically, it is the most personal and open I have ever been and musically we are breaking new ground for us and trying new things. We feel like this is the best record we have ever done.
Attack Formation is a challenging and fun thing to be a part of. If only on one song. Another aspect that is refreshing is don't have to play guitar and sing. I can take a break from that role and do something else. Now, I'm a member for life and could join the band on stage in any city in which they play, at any time; that is true for everyone that has joined. I don't know how my role in the organization will shape up; It may only be a brief, unannounced appearance here and there. Spoon is too important to us to stop now. We have so much more to say and new ways of saying it.
I'd like to take Attack Formation on tour with us. They are fun to hang out with and love a good prank now and then. I may not be able to pull it off. A lot of plans have already been made for the upcoming tour, but it would be fun to do some shows with them. So few people know about them and what they are all about. It's an ambitous idea, not easy. I want to help them how I can.

Attack Formation "We Are Alive In Tune" l.p.
New and great things come from war. The Attack Formation is no Different. This time, on their third full-length record, the entire band presents a very ambitious album. To make it fun again, they stay inside of doors long enough to come back stronger than ever. As the songs are made up of clan tracks as well as the five solo AFO artists(Reaganometry, Butcher Bear, Strong Silent Type, Horse Rappaport, and You And Me Falconry) who step out to claim new territory on thier own. "Back from Death......." is an understatement. From a trash-can sample rampage, to beautiful soundscapes, to rainy day songs coming from the heart through the chest. A message as big as the line-up(24 people) , this life is short and you might miss it.
