.......................... MARKUS PUHVEL (Tres, Vocals) is a native of California whose passion for music has led him to Latin America. A student of jazz for many years, he began studying the Cuban Tres guitar in the Oriente provinces of Cuba in 2000. Since then, he has toured Mexico with the son band Malanga, and most recently played with the San Francisco based Cuban group Palenque. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JOE MANCINO (Alto & Soprano Saxophones, Vocals) grew up near Hartford, CT and started playing the saxophone at age 9. After years of classical and jazz studies he had the opportunity to study with the late jazz saxophonist Jackie McLean at The Hartt School of Music, where he received his B.A. in Music Performance. During that time he found plentiful work on the Salsa and Merengue scene and he developed a love for Afro-Caribbean music that continues to this day.

JEANNE MULLER (Congas, Vocals)has been playing conga drums since 1977. She has studied with Michael Spiro, John Santos, Carolyn Brandy, and many other great congueros/as in the Bay Area. She has been in love with Afro-Caribbean
music since she was a child. "It's better than food!!".

PETER WILDE (Bass) has been playing in the Santa Cruz area for almost 40 years. He got his start at the A.P. Gianini Junior High School Battle of the Bands on June 6, 1966. His group lost. Pete is known for his rhythmic, hard-driving style and has played with many groups, including Pacific Rhy’m, the Steve Abrams Trio, Broken English, and Orquesta Gitano. He was also the band leader and arranger of Charangon Nueve, a Santa-Cruz based charanga group for eight years. He sneezes mightily.

Sounds Like
Bringing a blend of slick saxophone serenade and traditional Cuban son (a predecessor to salsa), Bailongo plays the type of music that makes hips swivel and dresses twirl with every syncopated beat. The sound is a product of the quartet’s training in jazz and Afro-Caribbean music, creating one highly danceable mixture.
-Jonathan Lopez, Good Times Santa Cruz, January 27, 2009
Bailongo is an exciting new Latin combo emerging in the Bay Area whose sound has been described as
"a Santa Cruz take on the Buena Vista Social Club." With a repertoire of original compositions and covers of classic Caribbean dance tunes, their music is a soulful and uplifting blend of traditional Cuban son, jazz, songo and timba. Their music features passionate vocals over the joyfully syncopated patterns of the Cuban tres guitar, (a signature sound of the islands!) and a broad pallette of Afro-Cuban conga rhythms. These sounds are bound together by a grooving upright bass, and punctuated with fiery, melodic saxophone lines and improvisations. Throughout much of Latin America, the word bailongo refers to a "community dance party," and that is precisely what Bailongo creates wherever they play; "an atmosphere of contagious smiles and dancing." Yet, they can also present a quieter, acoustic side for dinners, lounges and receptions, performing classic Cuban torch songs known as "boleros," and unique instrumental jazz renditions of Cuban standards.
