Batata Doce debuted in the spring of 2007 as a guitar/vocals duo of then-Atlanta couple Russell Owens and Leticia Arioli, performing their first shows at a DIY venue called the I.S.P. space in East Atlanta. Two of the clubs staff members were impressed but saw the need for a fuller sound, and thus the Negotiator Justin Sias (Elevado) and Navigator Todd Morrison (Pistolero) jumped on bass and drums. Former Rock*A*Teen Justin Hughes joined in the fun next as a 2nd guitarist (having previously played with Arioli and Owens in the band King Congregation), and saxophonist Todd Barnett signed up soon after.
The band's Tropicalia-influenced psychedelic garage pop sound is fun!! with mostly Portuguese-language vocals, also fun!! Live shows are extremely fun!! With songwriting from all members, the group has also been known to throw in the occasional Jorge Ben cover, just for fun!!
Since 2007 Batata Doce has performed with many different types of bands and other cool people, including Judi Chicago, the Selmanaires, Anna Kramer & The Lost Cause, Vampire Weekend, Los Campesinos, Cordero, Grupo Fantasma, Magnapop, Entropy, Noot D' Noot, The Booze, Izzy Cox, Child Bite, and Rev Rebel (a super cool person). The band is on tour winter of 2009.
