Batmacumba hosts the launch party for Black Rio 2 the new compilation bt DJ Cliffy. In the 7 years since DJ Cliffy compliled the first instalment of Black Rio he has dug even deeper in record shops and flea markets across Brazil to put together the second instalment - 18 seriously funky and obscure tropical soul and funk tracks. Apart from showcasing some of the music on the night their will be a chance to win copies of the album.
To celebrate the launch of the album Strut Records and Batmacumb have joined forces to put on a riotous launch party with live music from London School of Samba, the UK's premiere samba school featuring over a dozen drummers and dancers creating carnival chaos live on-stage. DJ Cliffy is joined on the decks by Strut Records head-honcho Quinton Scott with a sensational summer mix of tropical Brazilian sounds.
Early in the evening (7-9pm) there will be an exclusive presentation of the new documentary about the life of Wilson Simonal entitled 'Ninguém Sabe o Duro que Dei'. During the 1960's Wilson Simonal was Brazilian most successful singer, his weekly tv show commanded huge audiences and record sales to match; he was also black. In the late Sixties a whispering campagin linked him to the then dictatorship and his career came to a sudden halt. This new film explores the controversy surrounding his demise.

BRAZILIA TEIMOSA PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
Barbara Wagner brought to the ICA by Batmacumba. The exhibiion was the result of two years worth of research in the local fishing community of Brasilia Teimosa.
Once inhabited by god-fearing fisher folk, the Brasilia Timosa community of Recife is now comprised of a significantly more hedonistic group. With little income, these fun-loving locals follow the notion that their bodies are the greatest asset they possess, flocking down to the beach after a hard days work to bask in the strong rays of the sun.
In a startling exploration of this community Barbara Wagner captures perfectly this hurried essence of living for the moment, so important to the Brasilia Timosa’s happiness and survival. Deliberately intervening with composition so that the scene looks “more like fictional TV narratives than photojournalism” Wagner captures flawed standards of beauty and the wonderfully unrefined behaviour of her subjects. ”
A BRIEF HISTORY OF BATMACUMBA
When DJ Cliffy started Batmacumba over 12 years ago little did he know that it would become a benchmark for Brazilian culture in London. Back then the Brazilian scene was a niche now it has taken the world by storm and DJ Cliffy is still at the centre of thre Brazilian revolution at his new home the Notting Hill Arts Club.
Batmacumba forged an alternative vision for Brazilian culture in the UK which still remains at the forefront of the UK scene. DJ Cliffy has taken Brazilian to the four corners of the planet - anywhere people are willing to dig the carnival atmosphere - from Sydney Opera House to Montreux Jazz Festival.
The original mix of new & exciting music from Brazil has made it one of the most respected nights around. Batmacumba music guests have included Patricia Marx, Max de Castro, Ed Motta, Fernanda Porto, DJ Patife, Gilles Peterson, Spiritual South, Marcos Valle, Azymuth and many more.
Batmacumba is more than just a club-night, it is a multi-media event bringing together films, photography, graffiti, artwork, dance, capoeira and much more. Batmacumba has helped many young Brazilian artists break-through in the UK and continues to offer a space for exciting Brazilian culture.
'At any given Batmacumba night, you can expect everything from vintage carnaval bateria crescendos to fresh-off-the-cdr sounds of modern Rio.'
Wax Poetics magazine (USA).

Come join the celebration over the release of our new CD – Boteco!!
‘Boteco’ is an artful mixture of neo-futuristic traditional Brazilian rhythms with the right quantity of the best North American spices. It is funk and rock boiling and baking with samba, maracatu, frevo and baiao.
Put Pele and Mohammed Ali in a fictional mix machine. Now add Frank Zappa, Sergio Mendes, Tom Jobim and Roger Waters and fused in to one. What a mix eh? Bat Makumba is this fusion, multiplied by 2.
