Your friends,
SOMME
LOS OTROS ANIMALES
On our debut EP, Weight: The Music Slut says: "powerful and delicate, alike"
I Guess I'm Floating says they "can't stop listening"
Hate Something Beautiful had this to say about Weight: "...five songs that follow in the great instrumental traditional of acts such as Godspeed and combines a somewhat wall-of-sound shoegaze sound with a ferocity that gives this band an extra something about it. The fact that this EP was recorded in only one day makes it even more incredible - imagine where they can go next."
Sound On The Sound says: "...in the latest Somme tracks, I was reminded of the power of music unhindered by the constraints of adhering to a formula or accommodating a voice... "From Chicago, Somme is only two gentlemen, Daniel Medina on guitar and Kenny Preski on drum, but they produce a sound that belies their small stage footprint. The first song they sent over was “Massless” and it was a slap in the face. I listened to it and all I could think was Whaaaa? Where did this come from? “Massless” is journey on a stormy sea of expertly wielded distortion and aggressive drumming. Beginning in the pensive and quiet waters of a secluded cove then progressing to the fifty foot waves of a hurricane, this song hurls me overboard and back again. The companion track “Forge” is a quieter song filled with frenetic distorted riffs that while not as in-your-face as “Massless”, still serve up a heaping helping of brooding textures that tug at my heart strings in much the same way [Dirty Three's] Horse Stories still does to this day."
Bows+Arrows says: "In the few weeks we've been acquainted, I've come to know "Massless" well. It's a feat, becoming this familiar with every corner of a song's sound, especially given how scattered my listening habits have become. "Massless", though, commands the attention by way of being big-- a massive, magnificent affair. Equally impressive are the drums and guitar, the former keeping the song upright with stately, weighted kitwork while the latter pushes, intense and unsteady. Things culminate in an alarm of handclaps before overheating and eventually smoldering, back into air. It was a while before this-- the "massless" part-- made sense in the context of such a heavy song, and the song's polytropic nature became apparent. I'd say this is the best, most complete instrumental song I've come across in some time."
Chicago Soundcheck says: " Tearing down and reconstructing a musical wall the whole way throughout"
I Rock Cleveland says: "The results are crushing as Medina lays down lush, long guitars while Preski pounds the sound of impending doom on his kit."
Come Pick Me Up says: "...you'd be highly unlikely to discern that the band consists of a mere two members. The lush, vibrant instrumentation... is pretty killer."
Any Given Tuesday says: "Massless is an epic instrumental. Gargantuan drums and the long picking of an SG, it's six minutes well spent."
Indiependent Music says: "You might want to hold your breath and shut your eyes just to keep your brains inside your head. This isn't the stuff for the weak-hearted. I'm not sure if they are even from this era..like you're trapped inside the head of a bipolar person. Give it a listen - they're telling you what cool people are diggin' in the year 2050."
Vague Space says: "fucking brilliant"
Thepunkguy says: "highly recommended"
Can you see the sunset from the southside? says: "an epic battle cry."
Hot Stof says: "a good mix between bands like Spacemen 3 and Slint"
