It wasn't a career move that led to the formation of Barbara Cue. Four, and then a fifth, guys get together in 1997 to learn some songs by NRBQ and maybe do one show during breaks in everyone's schedules. But like many of the best-laid plans, it quickly evolved into a life of its own, and the quintet began working up its own material. Widespread Panic drummer Todd Nance, Smiling Assassin Crumpy Edwards and their string-stretching friends Jon Mills, John Neff and William Tonks (they'd all played together in various but separate combinations in Athens, Georgia's musical universe) worked up some material, played some shows, recorded and released a CD (1999's Louisiana Truckstop), did it again (2002's Ditch Lily), played some more shows, and continue in that vein, with more recording currently in progress and more shows on the horizon. 2004 saw the band sign with Sanctuary Records, and released Rhythm Oil. Sounding like what it would be like if the British Invasion crash landed in the deep South, Barbara Cue is, in the words of No Depression magazine, "all about cohesion. Tonks and Neff's complementary solos never overpower each other: abundant vocal harmonies identify the music as pop but don't dull the edges of enthusiastic performances." An Honest Tune magazine adds "Barbara Cue has mixed its own distinct blend of alternative, honky-tonk, country and rock into a stew to please the soul." Can't complain about that.
