Beatfanatic/ROBOTS & GUIDE EP 12" SCR018
Lab favorite Beatfanatic is back to add to his already huge catalog of tracks with three more beats on his own Soundscape label. Like his previous releases, the talented Swede conjures up funky tracks that look to the past for inspiration, but add a modern touch to keep the beats moving forward. Check the cool synth work on "Robots(1)" reminiscent of Kraftwerk, but with funky breaks underneath. "Hot(2)" takes it to sexy disco territory with a steamy groove driven by warm bass and slinky synths. On the flip, "Guide" gets the Rayko Cosmic remix, literally taking it to stratospheric heights with a slow burning cosmic groove that just don't quit. Quality as usual.

"Lab favorite Beatfanatic has been putting out mid-tempo GAMM style 12"s for years, but with the "Fly Away" 12", dude kills it on the new disco tip (maybe should've went with the Discoconductor moniker for this one?). The title track(1) goes for all out cosmic business, complete with swirling synths, italo bass hits, and outer space whistling. Italo/Balearic heads might recognize the groove from Louis' "Pink Footpath," but Beatfanatic definitely does his thing to it. My pick is "Black Satin Nights(2)," an uptempo disco jam that's sure to get the party going. Also features and edit of a slow motion disco cover of Jones Girl's "Nights Over Egypt" entitled "Nights In Ibiza(3)."

"Beatconductor's newest solo EP. Had a couple of his releases off GAMM, the funk / downtempo label consisting of Beatconductor, Red Astaire (Freddie Cruger), Tangoterje, Dubben & 7 Samurai. Together, they form the funky flavor force of Sweden. Fusing breakbeats, soul, latin, jazz, funk and rock is their special order and their fans are getting to know the name. First thing I noticed is the sound quality. Check the drums, the dude gets specific - crisp hi-hat's, snare that hits your hips and a bass that gets your knees. The first track, "Rocksteady(1)," keeps the funk and groove rolling. A great starter for a modern funk set. "All Right(2)" is more uptempo off the bat and the vocal reminds me of the charisma of Janice Joplin in a man. Sorry for the visuals, but he really does rip it over the fast rock funk. "Guarambembere(3)" spotlights the latin sounds - crisp trumpets, warm bass, conga, horns and spanish vocals. Simply awesome. The last track mixes up a jazzy feel with a spicy uptempo rhythm. Consistent as always. Check out his other aliases too - Discoconductor and Jazzconductor. He's a funkster with many hats."

“What's up with Sweden? And how do they always come correct with the breakbeat-fusion styles?! (i.e. Beat Fanatic, Red Astaire, Tangoterje, GAMM, etc, etc...) Whatever it is, the guys up there know who to work with it and take that positive, dubby, funky, earthy vibe to dancefloor perfection. Beat Fanatic's "Around The World In 80 Beats" is a well-rounded example of this. Take a listen to "Fridaynight Dubdisco Delite(1)" for a taste of what he's working with. Hear that subtle "Rock Creek Park" sample in the background? Those congas and keys? That funked-out bass? That's what I'm talkin 'bout. "Frosted Flakes(2)" is kind of on the same tip with the disco-rap drums and smooth vibe, but if you need to turn up the heat even more, check "One More Thing(3) and "Broken Descarga(4)." Just hope some people know how to samba, 'cause this shit rips hard on the latin tip. Want more of a house flavor? "Penthouse Dub Excursions(5)" will do ya right. "Swedes can make knives so can’t they make beats? If The Knife, Peter Bjorn and John and ABBA are any indication of Scandinavia’s dance floor prowess then you besta stay prayed up on the watchout! I discovered Beatfanatic as I reluctantly reviewed his 2005 monsterpiece, The Gospel According To Beatfanatic. I was a dance music neophyte stubbornly clinging to the dregs of hip hop but as it were, The Gospel… was one the best albums I’ve ever heard and I still crave songs like “Mighty Love” and “Doin’ Fine.” BF makes primarly sample-heavy, reconstructed instrumental cuts that throw in everything from Gwen Guthrie to DMX (what??? I know, chile). He’s got that elusive soulful finesse that other beat fusers like Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow just straight up leave out.
So I harassed dude on the MySpace and with a level sweetness and assertiveness that you rarely see from an artist him/herself, he mailed me his latest album, Around The World in 80 Beats. From Sweden. To the Bed Stuy. Bless his little Aryan heart!
Chile, lemme tell you, this doesn’t disappoint either and just reaffirms how talented and frustratingly overlooked dude is. I mean, look how relatively snark-free this post is! Standout tracks are definitely “A Lovely Day,” “African Rockers (duh)” “Completely Relaxed” and “Fridaynight Dubdisco Delite.” Although with any proper BF album, these are just the best of the fantastic as the whole album is truly a bumpworthy, fuck-the-fast-forward button, 17 tracks of rumpshaking, headnoddyness. I even had to make up words to encompass the flyness.
So, if you need convincing, hit the child’s MySpace and then go buy both The Gospel According To Beatfanatic (2005) and Around The World In 80 Beats (2007). They both may be imports but I found The Gospel… at comprehensive record stores like Newbury Comics in Boston and even Virgin Megastore. He’s also on some of those Kinkysweet Frequent Flyer comps (I have the Red Eye one). Of course there is always the internet and I believe Groove Distribution is where you want to start."

Breakin' out the Brazilian re-edits, Beatfanatic's lesser spotted
jazzier alter ego Jazzconductor concocts four rich caipirinhas of
sweltering South American soul. "Sapio" is a reconfigured Rio de
Janiero funk rock tune, "Wanda Vital" winds classic bossa melodies
around in a colourful dance, "Pra Oxala" drops some batucada drums in
amongst the 4/4 for extra points and "Pixiero" finishes things off in a
true Latin jazz group fashion.

Jazz Conductor/ "Brazilian Love Affair": “A Brazilian Love Affair” pays homage to the old school iterations of the genre, namely from the late 60s and early 70s. The EP kicks off with the divine "Sapio,” an Afro-Brazilian vocal chockfull of horns and slap bass. It’s super funky! "Wanda Vidal" is a gorgeous bossa cut with that 60s orchestral sound and luscious female vocal in the driving seat, a beautiful bossa track. "Pra Oxala" is a lo-fi samba. Layered drums and shout and response vocals are the hooks on this cut, which evokes vivid images of carnaval: very upbeat and festive. "Pixiero" rounds out the quartet of songs with a fast-moving, sexy samba vibe.

re-edits from the Beatconductor / Beatfanatic. This 12" sees his tackle
one of Herbie Hancock's lesser known tunes, the ace Latin-disco fusion
of "Saturday Night" from 1980's over-looked "Monster" album, then back
it up with a blast of proper Afro-Cuban percussion on Mongo
Santamaria's "Free Spirit / Espiritu Libre".

Vangelis / Turelli : Let It Happen - Beatfanatic Remix / Mekano (GAMM)
This latest addition to the GAMM family provides a blissful new
version of an old Balearic fave courtesy of the Beatfanatic. "Let It
Happen" by Vangelis and Demis Roussos is given a delicate drum beat and
aural massage, turning it from an on obscure album track to a 12-minute
rave-up! B-side "Mekano" by Turelli sounds like authentic Italo disco
alright and has some great hooks, but we're quietly confident that this
is a disco production of the 'nu' persuasion.
