Anastasia Russell-Head (harpsichord) and Fernando Ariel Gallardo (voice) are the core members of the ground-breaking Melbourne-based music ensemble Beautiful Rubble. For the past three years they have been developing innovative musically-based performance projects, beginning their collaboration in Navigators, for the Melbourne International Arts Festival in 2006. In 2007 this was followed by a new composition for John Cage’s Musicircus (Melbourne International Arts Festival) and further work for theatre company With the Teeth on their two sell-out seasons of I’ve Written a Letter to Daddy (Melbourne Fringe Festival 2007 and Butterfly Club 2008).
In 2008 they won the inaugural City of Perth Award for Most Innovative Performance at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts Putting on an Act festival, as well as premiering a new show, Expire, in the Melbourne Fringe Festival, for which they were highly commended at the Fringe Awards.
From the re-interpretation of Australian rock classics to the creation of Spanish baroque laments, Beautiful Rubble is experimental in fusing different traditions and influences to create intimate and intricate musical work.
The ensemble has worked with prominent established artists such as director and dramatug Margaret Cameron and conductor John McCaughey, and features a flexible line-up, which can include the unique combination of saxophone (Tarko Sibbel) and viola da gamba (Laura Vaughan).
