Bitchcakes Review
By Liv of Ribald Zine
When I first discovered zines, I also discovered my love of feminist and grrrl-run fanzines. I wasn't born early enough to have been around zines like Girl Germs, Bikini Kill or Satan Wears a Bra, but I recently did a zine trade with Rebecca, who writes the feminist fanzine Bitchcakes Girlzine, based out of Queensland, Australia. When I got the zine, I was very excited to finally find other fem-fanzines I could read. Bitchcakes is an awesome zine, and I recommend it to anyone.
ATTENTION! I'M SAD TO REPORT THAT
BITCHCAKES IS NOW DEAD IN ZINE FORM...BUT HAPPY TO INFORM YOU I HAVE STARTED A BLOG INSTEAD! VISIT
HTTP://BITCHCAKESBLOG.LIVEJOURNAL.COM AND YOU CAN VIEW ALL FOUR ISSUES OF BITCHCAKEY GOODNESS...AS WELL AS ALL NEW STUFF OF COURSE. THIS PAGE WILL REMAIN AS A TRIBUTE TO BITCHCAKES ZINE.
Bitchcakes is an unabashedly feminist zine created by me,
Bec, and my alter ego dirtywings. It's a mish mash of
articles, essays, fiction pieces, poetry, manifestos, reviews, art and song lyrics. Everything in it is feminist, fun and fantastic. I like witty banter
on popular culture. I think the personal is the political and vice versa. I believe in equality, creativity, freedom and (peaceful) protest of
injustice. You can either buy my zine for the low, low price of $2, or read it for free online in .pdf file form.
I am also enthusiastic
about trades, so don't be shy to ask me for one.
Please let me know what you think of my zine if you read it in any form, I thrive on feedback!
I write a lot of the stuff for my zine myself, but in every issue I print stuff from other people too. So feel free to contribute at any time. At the moment I'm on the lookout for stuff for Issue #5 - anything goes! Deadline is somewhere around late May - ask me for more details.
Viva la feminista!

"You believe in equality? That women shouldn't be beaten up or raped? That we should be treated as autonomous human beings capable of making decisions for ourselves? Yes? Good. You're a feminist. Deal."
- Jessica Valenti, 'We Don't Need Another Wave'
"Seriously, are things really cool the way they are when so many of us are upchucking our meals and getting raped and beat up and being paid less money than men? And being denied birth control, and being told not to have sex but be sexy, and a hundred other things that make us feel shitty?...It can be better. It has to be."
- Jessica Valenti, 'Full Frontal Feminism'

THANKS TO EVERYONE!
Thanks to all writers and readers for making Bitchcakes what I'd consider an enormous success! I've had orders for 'zines from as far away as New York. I'm glad the material interests so many people and am happy I am making a difference, however small. We can change the world into a better, more equal place one conversation at a time. So don't be afraid to get your friends and family talking and thinking!

hey there! so rad to 'meet you' your zine looks awesome!!! i'll definitely get involved with the online activity, sounds cool. hey, you can still buy a zine if you want eventhough you're in oz, ive been sending them out all over, i generally say £2 outside the EU, but if its anymore, ill just pay it as it' more about people reading the zine than losing a £1 in my eyes, let me know what you think :) Hope you're well xxx
