Last living survivor of the great Scottish-jewish music-hall tradition, Mr Diagonal invites us into his private universe for an enchanted evening of after-dinner rock ‘n’ roll.
We find ourselves on a personal visit of his museum of the impossible, to a soundtrack shot through with English pop, galactic glam rock and geriatric nursery rhymes, here accompanied by The Black Light Orchestra, Belgium’s premier pocket surrealist pop ensemble.
A show for all lovers of ahistorical costume drama, British humour and inclassable music, and for all who have ever known and loved Mr Jack, Mr Ben and Mr Bean.
An exquisitely relaxing evening of preposterous pop.
-THE HISTORY SO FAR...-
The Black Light Orchestra was founded in the cold and wet Autumn of 2005 by Mr. Diagonal a.k.a. Daniel Barbenel (pf, v) of Scotland and Quentin Manfroy (flute) of Belgium. They first encountered in the remote future, a few years before the Ray of the Black Light pierced planet Earth, in the squatted dwelling then inhabited by numerous outlaw artists. Later joined Eric Bribosia (kb), Greg Tirtiaux (sax), and Yannick Dupont (dr) - all are arguably la crème de la crème of the Bruxelles music scene.
The Black Light Orchestra, although a relatively new band, has already been commissioned to create an entirely new -and largely incomprehensible- musical, as well as a score for a new film on the Atomium in Bruxelles.
Their collective first visit to Japan took place in February 2006, merely three months after their maiden performance. The lads were paid the highest praises in various cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto. The endless demands for an encore were finally answered with the much-awaited second visit to the land of rising sun, realised in the Autumn of the same year.
Their trans-continental musical charm led the lads to a sizeable success in Japan – such that the nation had never witnessed before in a mere indie band with no contract with any of the Japan-based labels or pluggers. The surrealist pop ensemble was featured on Japanese Television twice (Music Tide on BS-i) and their tracks were played on some of the most tuned-into FM radio stations presented and recommended by popular and, more importantly, deemed-by-many-to-be-serious-and-trustworthy disc jockeys such as George Williams and Peter Barakan. Also, in April 2006, the boys played alongside Shibusa-shirazu who opened Glastonbury in 2004.
