Winner of BBC 1Xtra's Hip Hop Mix It Up Challenge, 2006
Sponsored by Darkotics Clothing ( http://www.darkotics.com )
Resident @ Big Chill House, Pentonville Road, Kings Cross, London
BOBAFATT originally hails from Croydon, Surrey, England, and began attempting to DJ at the age of 12 in a bedroom in Basingstoke, inspired originally by Jazzy Jeff's "Live at Union Square" & DJ Biznizz's Capital Rap Show mixes.
After shifting pause-button mix-tapes at school, he had his first public gig in 1992. Since then, he has played all over the UK (Bristol, Cardiff, Nottingham, York, Kingston, Taunton, Gloucester, Trowbridge, Reading), as well as places such as Big Chill Bar, Cargo, Jamm, Corsica Studios, Paradise, Akbar, Notting Hill Carnival & the Rhythm Factory in London, for Nice Up!, Soundcrash & Brick City Boutique amongst others. There have also been a few festival appearances, such as Arumdo Festival at Baskerville Hall in 2006 and Glastonbury Festival in 2001. He is currently a monthly resident at the BIG CHILL HOUSE in Kings Cross & is one half of MAIN SQUEEZE, alongside Mo' Fingaz (The Snugs).
BobaFatt plays a wide, eclectic range of music, but specialises in Hip Hop. He held down several residencies in Bath over the past decade, and has done radio work a few times on BBC 1Xtra as the first winner of MistaJam's "Mix It Up Challenge" in 2006, as well as playing on BBC Commonwealth, (Manchester), Eagle FM (Bristol) with DJ Lynx, DJ Kim, 1xtra's DJ Diggz and MC Kelz, Passion FM (Oxford) with DJ Kim & Kid Fury, Breaks FM (Exeter) with High-8, Radio 210 FM (Reading), and regularly for URB Online (Bath) for UK Hip Hop show Rockettime.
He has warmed up for the likes of DJ Jazzy Jeff, the Pharcyde, Lord Finesse, Scratch (The Roots), Gabrielle, Jalal Nurudin (Last Poets), numerous UK Hip Hop artists (Scratch Perverts, DJ Yoda, Blak Twang, Killa Kela, Phi-Life Cypher, Task Force, the Nextmen, Ghetto, Skitz etc), various other international DJs and over 1,000 bands, as well as being an extra in the video for Chemical Brothers / Noel Gallagher's No.1 single "Setting Sun".
He has provided scratching for a number of artists, resulting in releases on labels such as Pressure, Acid Fluff, Acid Fever and Plastic Raygun - on Stabilizers LP "Canine" and single "Low Slung" with MC Figure Of Speech (Boba was also on HTV Wales in 03, with Stabilizer & MC Chickaboo). Stabilizer received Muzik Mag's "Best Breaks Single 2002", as well as being a prominent force on the Breaks circuit, DJing worldwide and playing on Radio 1.
A few years ago Boba featured on “The Amazing Adventures of DJ Yoda” on Antidote Records, and on Roots Manuva affiliated label, Banana Klan / Trailblazers with 3rd Stream & Jimmy Screech, as well as being the scratch DJ for the 3rd Stream live band. 3rd Stream also collaborated on tracks with Roots Manuva, Fallacy, Lotek, HKB Finn, the Extremists & Ricky Rankin.
There have been a number of BobaFatt mix-tape / CDs independently released on KUPPLABEATPHREEX, including "Quest Of The Pause-Button Monkeez" & "Gruve Of Tha Stone", all of which received excellent press reviews, from the likes of DJ Yoda in Hip Hop Connection, amongst others.
He has worked as a vinyl vendor for over a decade, working at Subway Records, Replay (Bath), Fopp Westgate (Bath), Music Zone (Redhill), Soul & Dance Music Exchange (Notting Hill), HMV (Bath & Oxford St, London), Marvellous Cain's Sight, Sound & Motion, and independently running GROOVEMENT RECORDS in Bath, in 2003-2005. He has also been involved in several youth schemes for people like Theatre Royal, Bath (as a music director), and BBC Music Live, focusing on music, graffiti, DJing & performance & has also contributed charts & reviews to several music magazines.
He was also involved with SOUND KNOWLEDGE, an organisation specialising in facilitating music technology & digital media projects for young people in the Bath area. (www.myspace.com/gifted2007 / www.skmm.net)
BobaFatt was the daddy of Bath's longest-running, most successful Hip Hop night, STONEGRUVE SOCIAL, which ran from 2002 to 2007,and was often Venue Magazines recommended event & named Hip Hop Connection's "Club Of The Month" in mid 2004, pushing local talent and bringing countless acts to the city for the first time (Ty, Sway, Skinnyman, Rodney P, Foreign Beggars, DJ Dopey, DJ MK, DJ IQ, Jehst, Asaviour, Klashnekoff, Terra Firma, Mystro, Yungun, Million Dan, Lowkey, Doc Brown, Kamanchi Sly, Headcase Ladz etc), as well as DJ's such as Boca 45, John Stapleton & Andy Smith, occasional Funk, Drum'n'Bass, Soul & Hip Hop bands, local bands such as The Heavy & Blackbud and putting on events such as DMC.
For the full d.l. check www.myspace.com/stonegruvesocial
As well as solo projects & work with 3rd Stream, BobaFatt has worked with artists such as N.C.M., Elektralux, The Snugs, Ball, 3Amigos, Cara Roxanne & Crymes Against Music, as well as producing a variety of tracks with breaks producer Stabilizer (under the alias Snipey, including a remix for Peter Gabriel of Games Without Frontiers) and also tracks with MC F.O.S. & Rachel Roberts, in addition to numerous other collaborations and projects in the pipeline......

THE DIARY Volume 1.5 (20 Years of the Remix) now available for free download at WWW.MUSICOFSUBSTANCE.COM!
“This CD just shows how much Chris Read knows about historic Hip Hop production techniques - Its just a shame he wasn't creating this stuff during the eras he's covering as we would probably rate the man as being up there with Paul C, Pete Rock, Premier and all! - I can't think of another Hip Hop CD I've played so much in years” (ANDY SMITH - PORTISHEAD)
"Chris continues the rap anthology concept of his super-dope 'The Diary' megamix in the shape of a remix project, re-lacing acapellas from 89-2009 with historically accurate beats. 'The Diary 1.5' serves as a great platform for Chris to showcase his ample beat-making skills whilst referencing those who've inspired him." (DJ WOODY - FORMER WORLD ITF CHAMPION)
“Wicked! The perfect companion to The Diary Mixtape. Shows an impressive knowledge of sounds from all eras.” (MR THING - FORMER WORLD DMC CHAMPION)
"Crazy! This is Rap History in the making. Chris proves his production skills on this one to the fullest. A wonderful and refreshing journey through all eras of hip hop. Double thumbs up!" (MARC HYPE - FORMER ITF CHAMPION)
