Write what you want to write. Write what you're compelled to write. Write from your own experiences. Write about what's happening in the world around you. If songwriting doesn't make you happy - whether the song is happy or not - you shouldn't be writing songs. It has to fulfill something in you. Otherwise, it's just an exercise. Or a job. Except it usually doesn't pay well. If someone other than you likes your songs, you've had an impact most other people will never have. The reality of any artistic endeavor is that the final product is never as good as the artist envisioned in his/her head, nor as bad as the critic makes it out to be. It is what it is. Something completed, something finished, something from inside you that you've had the courage to put on display for all the world to see or hear.
Bully for you!
