  • Bio

.. Born Dead Icons are a hardcore punk band from Montreal, Canada. They play melodic, heavy and dark d-beat hardcore punk with various influences, mainly British bands Amebix, Discharge, Zounds, and Motörhead. They are notable for playing slower and singing more clearly than most bands in this genre. Members also play in the band Complications. .. Review: .. Born Dead Icons were never known for their diversity; it’s like measuring the level of a healthy ass-kicking. An ass kicking is an ass kicking, and an Icons track is an Icons track. You are not going to get the experimental segues of Tragedy (though there is a reprise of the mid-paced bridge to “Ruins” as the disc nears completion). And you sure as hell won’t find vast variation in the running times. This is deafening in its simplicity; short and to the point, downtuned bass-heavy punk rock crush. It may be the decisive political theme and somber aesthetic, but I have always identified Born Dead Icons with the likes of Amebix, His Hero Is Gone/Tragedy and From Ashes Rise (now signed to Jade Tree); perhaps the crust-y flavor of the apocalypse melded the influences. But with ‘Ruins’, I can’t help but think of Lemmy from Motorhead after developing a resounding social agenda. Lyrically the Icons have lost nothing of their lashing edge. They remain champions of the disenfranchised, critics of theology and a savagely strong voice in the struggle for individual and global empowerment. There are no idle musings or half-baked theoretical ventures among the songs contained here; proof positive that Born Dead Icons have surely made a visit or twenty to A.K. Press and Profane Existence, as they continue to be vehemently informed. “This is a slap in your face/ A taste of your own medicine / What you call tragedy / Is someone else’s daily reality / You give the world violence / Through murderous foreign policies / A violence worshipping nation. / Now it’s your turn to count the dead” (‘National Insecurity’). Surely events of the recent past have not gone unnoticed, and long-standing policies of North American isolationism provide much fuel to burn (“Land Hunger”, addressing the Palestinian conflict is a most potent subject for examination.) As they demand recompense over a crushing rhythmic design, it is evident that Born Dead Icons are not about punk as a commodity. It is a vehicle, a tool of expression and thought that transcends festivals and t-shirt stands in favor of hard floors and global unity (I retained a bit of guilt for my own inadequate knowledge of global affairs; time to hit the A.K. Press myself). It's true that the volatile nature and doom-laden melodies may make this a tough listen in these times. But its only a few spins before one can appreciate the wealth of power Born Dead Icons can generate just from plugging in an amp.
