"Live My Life" is about my experiences, about how I look back on certain events in my life. This time, I wanted to write more about my own life and be true to myself, says Boris about his third and most personal album to date.
Besides being a more personal album, Live My Life is also rougher around the edges and in your face than Boris.. debut album Rely On Me and follow-up album Holy Pleasure. What remains are the musically strong songs and a mature funky sound with exciting horns and vintage keyboards, reminiscent of the glory days of soul. The album was recorded almost fully live. Producer Dutchflower laid down an unpolished soul and funk base for ten tracks about Boris.. life as an artist and his unconditional love of music. The remaining three tracks were produced by Boris, guitarist Marcus Machado and American composer Michael Johnson a.k.a. Mixzo. Brian Gardner, who previously worked with soul legends such as Sly Stone, George Clinton and Marvin Gaye, mastered the album.
On his third album, the charismatic Dutch singer is in complete control. Boris and producer Antoon Tolsma (Dutchflower) co-wrote most of the songs in Tolsma..s studio. Boris also got in touch with Michael Johnson (Maxwell, Aliyah and Ludacris), with whom he had worked before. Together, they wrote the tracks ..I Want U To Know.. and ..Leave It Alone... With New York-born and bred guitar talent Marcus Machado Boris also wrote a few tracks. They worked so well together that Machado decided to move to the Netherlands and has now joined Boris.. new band. His Jimi Hendrix-like sound gives the funky music its raw edge, which is an exciting bonus, especially live.
Boris has found his niche on Live My Life. Seeking inspiration from his own life enabled him to come to terms with the events that occurred over the last few years. "When I was young, I used to idealize the life of an artist. In reality, when you suddenly step into such a turbulent life, many things just happen to you of which you have no control. The only things you are concerned with is releasing songs to entertain the fans and scoring hit singles rather than telling your own story."
For Live My Life Boris was able to choose the direction he wanted to take with his music himself, and he decided to deal with the fear of singing about his own emotions." I used to be afraid of writing about my own life, I didn..t want to be vulnerable. I..ve had to learn not to care about other people..s opinions and lead my life the way I want to."
..Leave It Alone.. is about growing up and dealing with his parents.. divorce, whereas ..Loosen Up.. and title track ..Live My Life.. describe how hard it is for an artist to have a family life. In ..I..m Sorry.. he apologizes for his selfishness and ambition, promising to mend his ways.
One of the key tracks on the album is first single ..If You Wanna Roll With Me.., a song about realizing childhood dreams, and about how success can destroy friendships. "Every man has a childhood dream. My dream has always been to be successful with a group of musician friends. That song is about how I felt when the ambitions of me and my friends turned out to be different."
Boris has always been musically influenced by soul icons such as Prince and Michael Jackson, but also by Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway. He has already worked with a number of internationally famous musicians in his relatively short career. He wrote songs with singer Sandra St. Victor of The Family Stand fame and has performed duets with soul stars John Legend and Angie Stone. In 2005, Boris was nominated for an Edison Award for Best Singer. In 2007, he won the Edison Jazzism Audience Award.
With his brand new band, featuring Marcus Machado on guitar, Leon Taihuttu (ex-Gin on the Rocks) on bass, Satindra Kalpoe (ex-Anouk, ex-Relax) on drums and Leon den Engelsen ..boards, Boris’ dream team is complete."By making this record I once again feel how I used to feel. I..m making that childhood dream of making it big with my music happen. That feeling of intense enjoyment is back; making music is the best thing there is. This band is all about team spirit. We are going to spread the funk among the people."
