"BRAKES is the name that the kids came up with it stands for: Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe. I asked the kids at the school for help on this so that I could do a better job reaching kids for this program. Kids do not want to listen to us old people standing there and lecturing them, they want to hear what other kids are saying.
I am planning on making a video DVD for distribution to N.C. schools (the police chief in my town is a friend of mine and he is on the board for the dept of highway safety for North Carolina). I have about 4 hours of video interviews with the kids from the school. I got my friends at ESPN and all the guys over at ESPN in Charlotte to help me with this. The interviews were very emotional and I feel confident that it will get any kid to listen to our message.
I have pictures of the car that are shocking, the police also said they would reenact the accident for our video if we want & we may do that too. I just want to make a difference and help kids realize that they need to be careful and drive safe; the racing needs to be done on the track and not on the street.
I do not think anyone else could do a better job of getting this message across than I can." - Doug Herbert
World’s fastest drag racers speak out against bane of illegal street racing
Illegal street racing most recently made headlines nationwide when eight spectators were killed Feb. 16 on a highway in Accokeek, Md. Although it is likely the most publicized, it is certainly not the only illegal-street-racing-related fatal crash reported even this month. A quick Internet search turns up numerous instances of such activities. But even one is too many. As many legitimate drag racers and NHRA fans have pointed out via online chat rooms and Internet blogs, the deaths could have been prevented. There are 140 NHRA member tracks around the country that offer NHRA Street Legal Drags presented by AAA. Recently, NHRA and some of the elite drivers of the NHRA POWERade Series produced a video that will bring the Race the Strip, Not the Street message to the public at their races and other outlets such as YouTube.
NHRA POWERade Pro Stock driver Justin Humphreys (pictured) knows well the hazards of street racing. He was a street racer in Maryland before he turned Pro, and he and his fellow POWERade Pros are joining NHRA to educate the public about the dangers of illegal street racing. B.R.A.K.E.S.is an organization sparked out of tragedy, but aimed at safety. On January 26th, 2008, Doug Herbert experienced every parents worst nightmare. His two sons, Jon 17 and James 12, lost thier lives in a tragic car accident in Cornelius, North Carolina. This horrible loss pushed the boys' father Doug Herbert and Jon's friends from their school to pull together and make a difference in the way teens think about driving. B.R.A.K.E.S.' goal is to encourage young drivers to be more careful driving on the street, and that racing should be done on the race track, not the street.
The name B.R.A.K.E.S. contains the message that they want to get across.
We have lots of plans including rewarding young drivers that keep clean diving records with prizes like trips to NHRA & NASCAR races, Jeff Gordon & Mario Andretti Racing school certificates and many other things. Notices of all the great things we will be doing will be sent out on bulletins from B.R.A.K.E.S. so please add us as a friend. Even make us a top friend if you would. We need to get the message out and try to save some kid's lives and save some parents from going through what I am going through.
Thanks everyone.
Sincerely,
Doug Herbert
Together we can put the BRAKES on wreckless driving.

Hey Doug, Thanx for the add.......
Just wanted to stop by and say hi and to let you know we just finished
building a brand new website for racers, families, friends, sponsors of
racers and promoters.. www.WTFRACE.com
We built this new website so that you can post pics, videos, polls,
blogs, forums and meet other people from around the world that race.
This site is for everyone from 4 year old's racing bmx to 94 year old's
racing Bonneville. Doesn't matter if you have an engine, pedals, sails,
wings, a radio control in your hand or the gravity taking you to the
finish line. You could race professionally or at local tracks it
doesn't matter. We hope to build this site so that all of you can have
a place to showcase your rides in every way. You can even use our site
to promote your own web pages. Once you log in, there is a lot more to
see and do also. Think of this as a Myspace/facebook for racers.......
www.WTFRACE.com Hope to see you there.........Mike
