Brian Andrew Marek - Utopian Flying Machines (2009) Disconcertingly shaky, held together by duct tape and dreams but somehow managing to occasionally achieve flight, these are my "utopian flying machines" - 14 diverse tracks looting and pillaging all my favorite genres for an eclectic pop/rock blend lyrically covering such topics as love, death, work, politics, ghosts, Walt Winston, conspiracy theories and, of course, peanut butter toast and tea. Enjoy the flight.
The Village Green Preservation Society (2008-present) No album yet, but there's always a few songs posted on our MySpace page!
The Vertigo Swirl - The Vertigo Swirl (2009) The Vertigo Swirl is my new psychedelic project and this is its first album. Five tracks recorded quickly and spontaneously in December of 2008 and January of 2009 including the epic titular improvisation. Inspired by the fine folks at the homemade lofi psych blog.
Brian Andrew Marek - The Lair EP (2006-2008) Sometime in 2007, Brian Andrew Marek disappeared into the basement of his South City home, and has rarely emerged since. Hear nine tracks worth of what he's been up to down there, plus five rare live solo performances.
Brian Andrew Marek - A Lion in the Sun (2005) (FLAC's) Brian Andrew Marek - A Lion in the Sun (2005) (single MP3 + cue sheet) Brian Andrew Marek - A Lion in the Sun (2005) (MP3's) Recorded in 2005, mixed in 2007, and finally seeing the light of day in 2008, this is my long-delayed declaration of independence. Sixteen faces, sixteen places, sixteen feelings, sixteen sounds. For a seamless listening experience, download the FLAC or single MP3 version.
Brian Andrew Marek - THEN! A Collection of Low Fidelity Recordings (1988-2005) Few of these lo-fi, lo-tech home recordings have ever been heard outside of a small circle of friends. Hundreds of songs from dozens of cassettes were auditioned to bring you 22 of the best (or my favorites, in any case).
Rocket Park - Teenage Folklore (1999) Catchy, punchy pop rock spiced with hints of prog, psych and glam and cast in a shimmering, modern wall of sound.
Rocket Park - The Effects of Eating Too Much Television (2000) More of the same, but darker, more chaotic, more adventurous.
Rocket Park - Up Against Goodbye (2002-2003) We bought our own recording gear and decided we would paint our own masterpiece. Little did we know the final brushstrokes wouldn't be in place for another seven years. It's all a damn shame, really, because it really would've been (and, I guess, is, now that it's floating around) our best album.
Rocket Park - Ghosts, Villains, Sirens and Superstars: The Alternate Teenage Folklore (1995-2003) A collection of live recordings and solo demos, presented in the same running order as the original album. Track thirteen is a previously unreleased song from the Teenage Folklore sessions, "Running Through the Night". An official bootleg for Rocket Park and/or Brian Andrew Marek freaks only.
Brian Andrew Marek - Indulgence (1993-1998) WARNING: These tracks are, indeed, indulgent. Never intended for public consumption, they were compiled in response to a request for some of "the weird stuff". About an hour of epic compositions, goofy experiments, trippy tape tricks, cosmic jamming and some of the worst saxophone playing ever recorded!
Angus Tweed - The Dark Side of the Moo! The Best of the Four Track Recordings (1988-1994) We had no particular aesthetic except to do whatever sounded like fun at the time. Some of the things that sounded like fun at the time were psychedelia, hardcore punk, prog rock, folk rock, indie rock, grunge and glam rock. The resultant melange made us unfashionable, to say the least - but we had fun. Here's some of our best recordings (including a few alternate mixes and unissued recordings), sequenced into the full-length album we never got to make.
Shane Bert and the Panhandling Playboys - "Chicken Strut"/"She's Got a Ton of Fun Buns" (2009) Blame it on the death of Lux Interior or just blame it on the PBR, but when Shane Bert came to call this week, he left sloppy, demented rockabilly in his wake. "Chicken Strut" is a danceable bit of idiotic genius, like Hasil Adkins singing "Surfing Bird" at a barnyard crystal meth party. "She's Got a Ton of Fun Buns" is a sexy, slinky soundtrack for stalking girls at Lane Bryant. This music has absolutely no redeeming social value and will leave greasy stains everywhere. I love it.
Shane Bert - Shane Bert EP (2008) It's a stripped down but raucous folk-rock hootenanny with Shane Bert, assisted by his friends Brian and Kate (a/k/a The Village Green Preservation Society). Four distinctive Bert originals plus covers of The Velvet Underground, Johnny Cash, The 13th Floor Elevators and St. Louis' own Bob Reuter.
Peter Pandemonium - One Hallucination Under Gosh EP (2008) Peter and Pandemonium are two grown men who can't be trusted around four-track cassette recorders. Hear them do terrible things to rock, country, folk and doo-wop on this sonic atrocity.
Peliexo - Peliexo (2004/2009 remix) Way back in 2004, my friend Shane Bert was perpetrating a performance art project under the name Peliexo, bringing some shock and awe to the St. Louis open mic night scene with cheezy drum machines, buzzsaw guitar and semi-improvised ranting. "But is Peliexo for me," I hear you ask. Well, I suppose that just depends on whether a description like "the missing link between Big Black and Wesley Willis" intrigues or frightens you.
"Manik" Myk Thompson - Manik Digressions (1991-1995) Tape manipulation, samples, skewed poetry, cosmic humor and his always outrageous guitars come together to produce a sound world that is uniquely "Manik". There's even a few bona fide (if slightly left of center) songs. Sit back, relax and enjoy nearly eighty minutes of Mykadelia!
Manik Myk & Friends - Celebrate Perversity (1996) Here's another blast of vintage "Manik" Myk Thompson ripped from cassette for your listening pleasure. This one's less musical and more conceptual, a two-pronged parody on the radio empires of the religious right and the limp left with a number of friends (including myself and a few of you geezers) pressed into voiceover duty.
File 13 (a.k.a. Full Dimensional) - Demos (circa 1994) I first met Andrew Aldrich in the mid '90's. One of the first things he told me was that his all-time favorite artists were Syd, The Flaming Lips, and Nirvana. Another was that he made lots of four-track cassette recordings in a psychedelic rock vein. This tape perfectly justifies Andrew's claim of Barrett/Coyne/Cobain as his holy trinity, filtered oh so beautifully through the bedroom studio aesthetic. Not to mention the funniest Bob Dylan parody ever ("Talkin' Travelin' Blues")!
Full Dimensional - Exhale (1995) My second cassette rip from the File 13/Full Dimensional discography finds Andrew Aldrich getting even trippier. Includes the epic "Tadpoles in the Bongwater".
File 13 (a.k.a. Full Dimensional) - Makeshift Viewmaster (1996) A third hour-long dose of mind-altering entertainment from the comfort of Andrew Aldrich's home to yours. I'm proud to say that I was the drummer on "Autumn Parade". Includes lyric sheet.
Full Dimensional - Memories of Roswell (1997) Andrew Aldrich and a few select guests celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Roswell incident with alien songs and alien sounds.
Full Dimensional - Re-Entry (1997) Two albums in one year? You bet, and not for the last time! The staggeringly prolific Andrew Aldrich returns to expand your mind and bang your head for an unforgettable hour that culminates in the classic "No Drug No God".
Full Dimensional - Title Strip (1998) The sixth in my series of File 13/Full Dimensional cassette rips finds Andrew Aldrich getting darkly beautiful and beautifully dark. Dig the puzzling popadelia of "Just a Scheme" and the emotive soundscapes of "Insomnia Ballet"! Includes lyric sheet.
Highway Matrons - The Demo Tapes Before "Drive By Sodomy Carjack Tragic Affair", before "Nothing Is Better", the music of the Highway Matrons was propogated on a series of cassettes. None were reissued on CD, and though some of the titles will be familiar to fans of the aforementioned albums, they feature here in early versions with original bassist Andrew Alleman (and, in some cases, that shadowy figure Miles). Other songs would never be revisited and remain exclusive to these tapes.
