Sounds Like
Great things come from the opposition of ideas and attitudes. In this vein, Bryon Friedman is an artist of extremes. By day a competitive machine, by evening a thoughtful romantic, his music doesnt get caught in between, but rather plays heartedly with both sides. Although comfortable at high speeds, his soundscape is more lazy river, confidence in time, and unrushed. His words are both specific ("you're only five foot two") and open ("can't wash his thoughts upstairs"), drawing the line between biography and gentle optimism. Backed by a real barbeque band of friends, there is something more to his melodies than the monkey trap of singer-songwriter appeal, the layers of melodica, Wurlitzer, and percussion lend to a ribs and beer party vibe. Whether its his lyrics, sounds, or vibe that you get lost in when listening to Bryons first recorded offering, Road Sodas will draw in listeners from the whole spectrum.

Bryon has spent the last 10 years of his life traveling the world in pursuit of the perfect run. Spending countless hours in hotels, ski lifts, International terminals and café’s surrounded by coaches, athletes, fans and journalists. All the while finding relief in the corner of a hotel lobby playing songs for a group of friends or penning lyrics on an airline napkin on an overnight trans Atlantic flight. His trusty acoustic guitar accompanied him on nearly every trip as he crafted the songs that became “Matchstick Memories.”
“Matchstick Memories” was recorded during the summer of 2008 at Brotheryn Studios in Ojai, California. The band lived in a yurt high above the legendary surf spot Rincon. Surrounded by avocado orchards and stellar panoramic views the band settled in for two weeks of friendship and music making. Waking up early to spend time surfing or taking in the uniqueness of the surroundings the band fell into a relaxed rhythm and productive recording schedule. Focused on Bryon’s clear storytelling the musicians that surround used discretion and tact in their contribution to the stories at hand. Producer Marc Benning used subtle elements of groove, tempo and instrumentation to help bring the songs to life without over producing. Musicians came from near and far to lend a hand, live at the yurt and take part in the making of “Matchstick Memories”.
“Matchstick Memories” is filled with songs full of optimism, hope, disappointment, fear, trust and most importantly belief in a life based on humility, respect and love. The rule in the studio was absolute honesty to each other and the song; this is evident in the fabric of each and every track. This fundamental principal was key in elevating the performance, production and musicianship. The result was an inspired and magical recording. Check out the behind the scenes film (shot in 8mm) of the making of "Matchstick Memories" below!
