Bucketfull Of Brains was founded in 1979 by Nigel Cross. It has published continuously since that time under a series of editorial teams. It covers a wide-range of musics; an erstwhile sub-title listed "rock, garage, psych, folk-rock, pop, rock’n’roll”, and to that can now be added country, soul and glam and probably more. Throughout its life it has retained an affection for songs with guitars and thus bands like the Barracudas, the Flamin’ Groovies, the Dream Syndicate, the Long Ryders and the Green Pajamas hold a special place in its affections.
This new issue has been something of a struggle to get out. Not from content which we’re overflowing with, but finance. For reasons too convoluted and drawn out to rehearse here, though we will put a resume up on the blog shortly, we have been broke and hand-to-mouth (if that) for the last two years or more. How we’ve been able to survive is through our loyal subscribers, many of whom have stuck with us over more than a decade. But most of their current investment is dead, either spent on previous issues or the basic infrastructure of BoB .
So we’ve thought about what we can do to get a bit more cash. In fact to gather enough reserves to ensure we can pay for the next three magazines without even needing to solicit advertising. After doing a bit of basic maths we’ve realised that this is possible to achieve with 400 new subscribers. We suspended subscriptions about 18 months ago due to the uncertainty of continuance but we’re now reopening them in a revised fashion.
So from now Three Issue Subscriptions are now open. For the UK it’s £8.50, for Europe £11.50, and USA and ROW £14.50. You can start with #73, or with #72 (the Jesse Hector cover). Please pay via PayPal - just choose the relevant location and click on the button below.
The reality is that if you’ve ever thought of subscribing to Bucketfull Of Brains now is the time to do it; certainly in England it’s going to cost around the same as three beers. We do sadly have to pass on carriage costs to our overseas readers, but in most places it is the only way you’ll be able to get it for a while.
Lastly we would ask you to pass this on to all and any remotely relevant mailing lists or contacts you have or have access to. It’s our 30th anniversary year and we would like to see 31, and while we wouldn’t be quite ready to call ourselves an institution our continued existence does keep the editors out of one.
BACK ISSUES
Check out our back issues. We still hold stocks, in varying amounts, of quite a few of them. You can check out the contents on the slide show, and gradually we’ll be listing them in more detail on the blog.
We definitely have copies of 46, 49, 52 – 71. We’re right out of 47, 48, 50, and 51, though I’m chasing a stash of 50s that I’ve got wind of. We also have copies of the Bucketfull Of Possibilities CD.
Buy four back issues from 46, 49, 52, 54, 56, 57, 59, 61 – 70 and they’re £10.50 (UK), £13.50 (Europe) £17 (USA & ROW)
The Possibilities CD (2004) – 21 exclusive tracks by artists such as Steve Wynn, Victor Krummenacher, Phil Seymour, and the Windbreakers - £4 (UK), £5 (Europe) £6 (USA & ROW).
Please pay by PayPal quoting bucketfull(at)blueyonder.co.uk.
If you really can’t use PayPal drop us a note and we’ll see what we can sort out.
Sid Griffin's band the Coal Porters are playing, believe it or not, the Royal Opera House tonight and tomorrow night, Nov 27 & 28, in Covent Garden, central London.
There are thirty tickets available to the public and we play bluegrass after the Fat Lady sings and takes off her Viking helmet.
Onstage 9:30pm for an hour, phone 020 7240 1200 www.roh.org.uk
Sunday November 29 the Coal Porters play the not-quite-as-posh (but just a proud) Half Moon pub in Herne Hill, south London, as part of the three day festival there.
We sold out the famous London folk club The Magpie's Nest last Thursday night in Islington and it was simply a splendid night! Hope to see you at either the Royal Opera House or The Half Moon this weekend...and thanks for all the jokes about the Marx Bros. in A Night At The Opera!
