"Butterflies' latest aims for the heart and rarely misses. Kimbrough's songwriting is detailed but not obsessive, allowing the gauze of memory to soften his focus. In tandem with his voice, it gives the songs a welcome sense of sincerity and intimacy."
-Bryan Reed, Independent Weekly
"On Nothing’s Personal Kimbrough has crafted songs that are plaintive and child-like or just heavy enough to open up the spine. Save for one divinely heavy track (‘Relive Brielle’) that tips its hat to Marcy Playground and Chapel Hill’s Chip Smoak, the album is decidedly low-key. Kimbrough sings with pierced, cool vocals that have an echoed quality and is perfectly accompanied by Katie Zickefoose’s vocals (‘Four Letters’)...Kimbrough has a fine way with lyrics. They’re either locked in circular mystery, rich in humor or incredibly vivid."
-Bootleg Magazine
"In an impersonal world, where it is easier to go through the self-checkout line instead of talking to a cashier, Josh Kimbrough has created a personal connection to his musical audience through his album, Nothing's Personal."
-Go Triad
"Filled to the brim with nostalgia and the kind of common sense songwriting that appeals to all ages, Nothing's Personal proves that emotional music doesn't always have to be painfully dramatic."
-The Daily Tar Heel
Marrying meticulous instrumentation to soaring vocals, Butterflies reimagine indie pop in laid-back folk environs, fiddle darting around acoustic guitar and a simple trap kit. Those intimate settings provide the ideal backdrop for the contemplative (though hopeful) soul searching of former Mortar and Pestle frontman Josh Kimbrough, who gets help from a revolving cast of friends and Trekky Records associates, including pianist/ girlfriend Katie Zickefoose. She adds generous harmonies. —SG (Independent Weekly)
Josh has been writing songs since he was fifteen and has fronted such bands as Mortar and Pestle, Westfalia, and Straight No Chaser as well as contributing significantly to Trekky's house band, Auxiliary House. With Butterflies, Josh has retained many of the elements of his previous projects, while increasing the care given to the craft of pop songwriting. While his signature fluttering guitar lines and vocals are still the bedrock of his compositions, his newfound focus on mature and concise pop songs has lead him to create more fully-realized musical statements than ever before.
Butterflies has released a series of handmade EPs since forming in late 2006. The proper debut, titled Nothing's Personal, will be released by Trekky Records in November of 2008.
Josh has played guitar with Embarrassing Fruits, Wil Donegan and the Apologies, The Strugglers, Barghest, and Auxiliary House. Pitchfork thinks his guitar playing is 'concise'.
Josh has played trombone with David Karsten Daniels, The Strugglers, The Never, Deleted Scenes, Embarrassing Fruits, and Auxiliary House. He probably doesn't want to know what Pitchfork thinks of his trombone playing.
