A los trece aos era miembro de la Orquesta Filarmnica de La Habana, proviene de una familia de msicos acadmicos. Su hermano Orestes, ya muerto, toc cello y piano. De ellos se dice, ms bien se discute, que inventaron el mambo cuando eran miembros de la Orquesta de Arcao y sus Maravillas en los aos 40. El mejor bajista de la msica del caribe naci en 1918 en La Habana, segn el escritor cubano Guillermo Cabrera Infante, en la misma casa donde vio la luz Jos Mart en 1853. Cuando en las sesiones, Orestes no tocaba el piano, lo haca Julio Gutirrez o Pedro Juztiz Peruchn. Estoy hablando de las estrellas cubanas de ese momento, todos eran unos virtuosos. La flauta la tocaban o Richard Eges, el mismo de la Aragn, o Jos Fajardo. Las trompetas eran dos: la de Armando Chocolate Armenteros que ahora en el 2000 tiene 73 aos, todava toca, y bien, y sigue alimentando una historia que no termina y que lo cataloga como uno de los mejores trompetista de la salsa y la del fallecido Alejandro El Negro Vivar, tan bueno como el otro y con quien sostena unos piques que eran para tomar palco. Los saxofonistas tambin eran dos: Jos Chombo Silva y Emilo Pealver. El trombn lo manejaba Generoso Tojo Jimnez, de 82 aos. Andrs Echeverra, mejor conocido como "El Nio Rivera", era el tresista de estas sesiones, (ahora cuenta con 80 aos). Los percusionistas eran Guillermo Barreto, ya fallecido, tambin baterista de jazz y paila mayor de Cuba; un msico peculiar pero infaltable en estos encuentros Gustavo Tamayo, girero; Yeyo Iglesias en el bong y Arstides Soto, quien no es ms que el conocido Tata Gines, conguero de 69 aos.
Razn tena Andy Garca para rescatar del olvido a Cachao, y es que "como su ritmo no hay dos".
