Poetic edition of our Points of Unity:
We are the ones that play.
Our amplified hearts beating in resistance to domination’s daily drone, we play for the liberation of bodies, minds, spirits, cultures, and earth.
Believing the murmurs in our communities can turn into movements, we play to support local communities facing and fighting oppression.
We play because people before us played. We honor and respect the roots and histories of samba and create culture as a tool of resistance, and a vehicle of hope.
Walking together in rhythm, we play to discipline our bodies believing that the fire of our sound will help dance a new world into existence, a world where the harmony and discords of life are remixed as music.
In black and blue, we play our drums with courage knowing that any struggle against the status quo makes you subject to a bruising.
Influences
Samba, hip hop, southern collegiate marching bands, peoples' movements around the world and especially in the global south and southern US. Specific influences include Yacumbe, Olodum, the NCA&T drum line, our sometimes-maestre Eduardo da Sauza, do-it-yourself "DIY" culture, and everyone who comes to play with us.
We've been bringing beats to the streets in support of people's movements since 2003. While we are deeply influenced by the rhythms and history of Brazilian Samba, we consider ourselves a radical drum corps, not a true samba band (escola/school). A testament to the music's global pervasiveness, we actually learned our first samba licks from an escola en Stockholm, Sweden, called Yacumbe. While we have been known to travel on occasion, we're proud to do most of our playing around home in NC. Check out the list of our "shows" to get the flavor of what we do.
No experience is required to play music with us, only interest and dedication. Practices are open to everyone but we ask that interested players spend a few weeks observing and hanging out with us first - come see us and we'll tell you all about it. Email cakalakthunder@yahoo.com for directions.

Thank you for letting me practice with you guys! I'm always up for meeting new musicians and it's a huge plus that you're all about social justice. Yee-yuh!
