"Calhoun do indeed have their hands in more than one honey pot and this creates a slick album with an uncanny flow. The lyrics are just as soulful as the music. Falter Waiver Cultivate is the sort of album bands across the nation wish they could have." - Bryan J. Sutter , PLAYBACK: St. Louis (Oct 10, 2008)
"Calhoun's third album finds the Fort Worth group congealing into a solid force. Tim Locke's vocals pitch high with a hushed trill, leading the material in a moody but not overly dramatic fashion. The deceptively eclectic arrangements temper Locke's most emotive moments. 3 Stars." - Doug Freeman, The Austin Chronicle (Sep 26, 2008)
"Whether soaring above layers of orchestration, or nestled into unspoken subtleties, Calhoun boasts a mature, polished sound brimming with hooks and astute melodies, where string arrangements and blossoming pedal steal are always welcome visitors." - Jamie Lee, Honest Tune (Sep 26, 2008)
"Falter.Waver.Cultivate walks a fine line between the lush and the delicate. The former, one assumes, owes thanks to [producer Stuart] Sikes, but the latter must be the work of frontman/songwriter Tim Locke, who every bit earns his Best Songwriter title here. [It] is a disc worth remembering." - Pete Freedman, Dallas Observer (Sep 18, 2008)
"BOTTOME LINE: Not only is Falter Waver Cultivate the year's best local release, it should be a contender for top 2008 indie-album lists nationwide." - Mike Daniel, Dallas Morning News (Sep 09, 2008)
"[Calhoun is] arty without sounding pretentious, with a dark edge that keeps you unbalanced, even when the music is at its brightest and most tuneful. - this is a serious band with their own unique vision, even if it is a bit hard to decipher." - J. Poet, Crawdaddy (Sep 03, 2008)
"'Falter.Waver.Cultivate' is a strong & cohesive album of dynamic, dramatically emotive spaces, streaming with wonderfully realised ideas. In fact, Calhoun have crafted themselves a magnificent album here. All it needs now is for the world to fall for them in return. Which is where you come in… " - Ian Fildes, AmericanaUK (Aug 17, 2008)
"[Tim Locke's] latest and most enduring outfit, Calhoun, has proven an excellent vehicle for developing and delivering his preternatural gifts for beautiful melodies and sweet, sad, soaring musical moods." - Jimmy Fowler, Fort Worth Weekly (Jun 18, 2008)
"Calhoun, fronted by singer-songwriter extraordinaire Tim Locke, serves up generous portions of Grade-A angst with a smile." - Anthony Mariani, Fort Worth Weekly (Jun 18, 2008)
"Falter, Waver, Cultivate - Everything feels spontaneous but is never anything less than totally under control. You’re always in good hands. Calhoun: Neither friend nor foe. File under Indie-Rock Brilliance." - ANTHONY MARIANI, Fort Worth Weekly (Apr 23, 2008)
"Breathe from Calhoun's third CD, Falter. Waver. Cultivate - Best Song, 2008 Fort Worth Music Awards." - Fort Worth Weekly
"Tim Locke - Songwriter of the Year, 2008 Fort Worth Music Awards." - Fort Worth Weekly
"Calhoun's Tim Locke, Fort Worth's answer to Elliot Smith and Jeff Buckley is just too damn good to remain a secret." - K. Shimamoto, Stash Dauber
"[The Calhoun self-titled record] is a must have if you love gorgeous sorta poppy, sorta rootsy, sorta rockin', really splendid music-written and performed by some of the best musicians in the country. " - Cindy Chaffin, Fineline
"Tim Locke - Songwriter of the Year, 2006 Fort Worth Music Awards." - Fort Worth Weekly
"Tim Locke, the guy with the Lennon-McCartney -esque songwriting ingenuity, is currently riding high with Calhoun and he makes the most of every note on his bands recent, outrageously good eponymous full length." - Fort Worth Weekly
Depending upon what part of the country you're in you
may or may not have heard of Calhoun yet, but when you
listen you will know. You will know that Calhoun is
picking up where many others have left off. Picking up
and taking off with breathtaking views and sweeping
wide open sounds. A worthy companion to the epic
landscapes and big skies of Texas, from where Calhoun
hails.
Singer and songwriter for the band, Tim Locke is well
known amongst the Fort Worth scene for his work with
former bands Dead City Radio and Coma Rally. In
Calhoun, Locke soars to a new level of soundscape
glory with a band worthy of his grand vision. Blending
folk, rock and pop genres effortlessly, Calhoun
envelopes the listener within their music and lyrics
that in time can seep into the psyche and take hold
with its building grip.
Falter.Waver.Cultivate is Calhoun's third record and really the first as a full-time band. Grammy®-winning
producer/engineer Stuart Sikes (The White Stripes, Cat
Power, Hot Hot Heat) helped recreate in the studio the
same crackling kinetic energy that has captivated live
audiences throughout the band's native Texas and on
its frequent forays across the country.
Locke credits those audiences for persuading band
members to truly dedicate themselves to Calhoun's
ongoing success. We were very encouraged by peoples'
responses on our first couple of trips out across the
midwest, he says. We were doing other things on the
side, but each of us chose to set those projects aside
and give Calhoun our total focus. A focus and
commitment that becomes quite evident when one
experiences Calhoun live.
Falter.Waver.Cultivate reflects the newfound
cohesiveness that developed while touring in support
of Calhoun's 2006 self-titled album. The last record
was still basically a singer/songwriter record, Locke
says. I went into the studio with a bunch of songs
written on the acoustic guitar and just had people I
knew come in and play whatever they wanted. There were
a lot of overdubs and a lot of drum loops and it was
just a stylistic mish-mash.
Now this record-this is the band, he adds. It's not
entirely live; obviously there are some overdubs. But
it's the band and it's real. It's raw. Everything is
quite dry. And it's the way we sound on a stage. I've
never made a record with so few tricks and to be
honest, it was a little terrifying.
The we in Calhoun is Locke (lead vocals, guitar),
longtime collaborator Byron Gordon (bass), Jordan
Roberts (guitar, keys), Mike Ratliff (drums) and Nick Groesch (keys).
Together, their music has been described as full of
catchy melodies and irresistible hooks, and even as
gorgeous, melodic, sorta poppy, sorta rootsy,
sorta rockin', really splendid music.
You can call it what you will, but Locke says, We're
just a pop band. Then he laughingly concedes
a nod to the root-rock and alt-country influences that
others hear in the band's music: Well, let's say
we're just a pop band with a pedal steel thrown in
occasionally.
Calhoun will tour throughout the Midwest this spring,
including a prime showcase slot at the SXSW Music
Festival. Northeast and West Coast dates will follow
in the summer.
Hey there-been a long-time fan, since the Dead City Radio days... I wanted to know if I could somehow buy a copy of "Love Songs for the Very Low" and the first two Calhoun albums. I can't seem to find them anywhere. Thanks- Cohe

Thanks for the friendship.. Hope you enjoy the music and message behind it. My mission in life is to fight Human Trafficking. understanding the individual pain of others is sometimes to painful for an other individual to touch and that is frightening ...what i mean is that someone whose life is not traumatized and brutalized as a regular sequence of every day events unconsciously seeks the camouflage and shelter of apathy and banality from the reality of such devastating anguish and terror ...but the spirit of young people who are used as sex slaves in the systematized global industry of human trafficking is now reaching out to the human fellowship in hope and desperation and through technology ...it is scary when humanity turns a blind eye to this horror ...its like ignoring genocide whilst it is happening ...what i am asking is that if you hear the cry of these young people who are existing in an environment of torture and brutality each and every day that you then please do not turn away from them ...please reach deeply into your heart and soul and please in 2009 join a movement or become a part of an event that challenges modern slavery in the 21st century ...
