Callow’s music is marvelously cynical and painfully hopeful. The name Callow (adj; immature, naïve, raw, youthful) is as ironic and honest as their sound.
“Going to hell never sounded quite so soothing.” – Bill Frost, SL City Weekly
Gared Moses—singer, songwriter, and rhythm guitarist, has been writing music for various projects since the mid 90s, including composing scores for college theatre. His first indie project was called Honeyville, which later morphed into Badapple, an upbeat rock band with punk influence and pop undertones. In 2003 he joined bassist Tim Watson and Callow was born. Their sound, which had a jagged, off-kilter feel, continued on that track through 2005, when they moved to San Francisco. There they eventually met lead guitarist Rob Goodson (Thought Riot, Silent Film Stars) and drummer Sami Knowles, and their music has taken on a breathy, ambient quality with sparse percussion and haunting harmonies.
Callow is currently alternating their time between touring throughout the west and recording live sessions in a cabin in the woods of northern California. Their new EP, which is slated for release in January 2010, is evocative of the band’s desire to celebrate and mourn and thoughtfully embrace the inherent contradictions of life.
“Callow executes their instrumentation with the air of seasoned musicians.” -- Camilla Taylor, Slug Magazine
“There’s no need to bait praise for Callow.” – Jamie Gadette, SL City Weekly
