On the Corner There was a man alone on a street corner with a lute and a silver cowboy hat full of change. Cars whistled obnoxiously by, spattering mud over the sidewalk and drowning out his instrument. Still he played. And sometimes he sang. They saw him. They heard his song and his drifty tune. Some understood. He was like a graveyard statue to them, unpolished, crying rusty tears, and all the more beautiful for it.
