Born in a small country town in New Zealand, Carla began singing on stage at age 11, discovering a love of song writing at age 13. She moved to Australia with her mother and siblings when she was 15 but not until age 19 did she play her first original gig which led to supporting major international artists such as KD Lang, Roachford & Ben Harper. Her first residency was at the Hopetoun Hotel in Surry Hills, Sydney where a steady fan base began to grow. Shortly after which Carla was invited by Richard Kingsmill of Triple J Radio to perform live on the Oz Music Show program, and interest crept in from local labels. Sydney label the Engine Room signed Carla in 2000, prompting her to work with producers such as John Holbrook (Natalie Merchant), Carmen Rizzo (Fiona Apple, Seal) and Ken Nelson (Coldplay, Kings of Convenience) which would see the completion of her first studio album in 2002. Signing to Columbia Records, Sony Music in New York, the debut album ’Departure’ was released in July 2003 to critical acclaim, voted as one of top ten best albums of 2004 by leading street publication in Australia, Drum Media. The albums single, ’Wanderlust’ went on to feature in Michael Stipe’s (R.E.M) directorial debut in the film ’Saved’ as well as appearing on the hit US television series, ‘Everwood’. National tours of the US, Australia and New Zealand followed, headlining her own shows as well as supporting artists such as Howie Day, The Thorns, The Pretenders & Damien Rice. Carla also explored the co-writing realm with the likes of Glen Ballard (Alanis Morisette’s "Jagged Little Pill") and UK DJ Paul Oakenfold, resulting in the number one dance hit ‘Southern Sun’ as featured vocalist also. In December 2003, she received an invitation by Mary Guibert (Buckley’s mother) to be a guest performer at the Jeff Buckley tributes held in London (The Garage) and Ireland. After parting ways with Sony in 2004, Carla continued to write new material, growing more interested in the independent route, and with the help of investors and friends, began the project that would become her latest release, ’Pure Things in Wild Places’. A truly independent project, Carla self-produced, co-engineered and designed everything from the cd packaging through to the marketing materials to get her sophomore recording into stores by October 2006. ’Pure Things In Wild Places’ is released in Australia by MGM Distribution and through her own label, OfOne Music. Get it at the Australian iTunes Store now! Soon to be available on iTunes worldwide.
